4 oz. very sharp yellow cheddar
2 medium red bell peppers, about 12 oz.
3 large garlic cloves, peeled
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 teaspoon honey
1/8 teaspoon chipotle chile powder
8 oz. ziti or penne rigate (or elbow macaroni)
3 cups small cauliflower florets
3 tablespoons finely chopped chives

Procedures

Shred the cheese on the large holes of a box grater and set aside. Cut the peppers in half and remove the seeds. Cut peppers into 1-inch pieces and put in a small saucepan with ? cup water. Cut the garlic in half, lengthwise, and add to the saucepan. Bring to a boil, lower the heat to medium, and cover. Cook for 15 minutes, or until the peppers are very soft. Transfer the contents of the saucepan, including the water, to a food processor or blender. Add the butter, honey, chile powder, and salt to taste and process until very smooth. Return to the saucepan. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cauliflower and cook for 12 minutes, or until tender. Drain well and shake dry. Transfer to a large bowl. Heat the sauce and pour it over the pasta. Add the cheese and stir well. Add salt to taste. Sprinkle with chives. Serves 4 to 6

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A trio of Republican senators is in North Carolina making the case for protecting military spending from more than $1 trillion in budget cuts that will slash both domestic and defense programs.

Sens. John McCain of Arizona, South Carolina's Lindsay Graham and New Hampshire's Kelly Ayotte visit Fayetteville on Monday. They're also in Florida and Virginia to decry the effect of military spending cuts.

The cuts were agreed to last summer by congressional Republican leaders and President Barack Obama. Congress is scrambling to come up with a way to avoid automatic cuts in domestic and military programs of $1 trillion over a decade.

A U.S. Senate committee report says North Carolina will lose health screenings, education, senior nutrition, veteran's services and employment help worth more than $100 million.

Microsoft opens Azure Accelerator in Bangalore, India

Hot on the heels of the launch of the Microsoft Accelerator for Windows Azure program in Israel in April this year, the Redmond giant is all set to kick off similar proceedings in India.

Having narrowed their selection from over 200 down to 11 applicants, the accelerator will incubate these startups over a period of four months, providing office space, Azure credit, technological guidance as well as mentorship from global business and technology thought leaders, with a view to help them turn their ideas and prototypes into success stories in the country?s nascent startup ecosystem.

At the press conference where the final 11 startups were announced, Amit Chatterjee (MD, Microsoft India (R&D) Private Limited) mentioned that there are a couple of key trends in evolving technology businesses in India ? the first being that there is a shift in focus from offering bouquets of services to becoming agile product-based development teams. The second is that tech entrepreneurs in the country are looking beyond India and targeting global markets with their products and services.

These are indicators of a surge in innovation and a desire to expand customer bases, both of which make India an ideal location for an accelerator program like this one.

He also stated the three primary aims of this program:

1. To drive innovation and entrepreneurship from India.
2. Help transform big bold ideas into realities.
3. Help build a few major startups that will show the way for others to follow.

Amaresh Ramaswamy, Senior Director at Microsoft India (R&D) Private Limted, who has been heading up engagement with the startup community for the India accelerator program, shed light on what the startups will be doing over the next four months:

• Work hard on their ideas/prototypes over a period of four months beginning in September, armed with the necessary tools in a nurturing environment.
• Interact with mentors to revalidate, productize and go to market with their ideas.
• Gain knowledge from the 360-degree mentorship they will receive from industry leaders, VCs and domain experts.
• Engage in weekly talks and informal dinners with mentors and guides, and also attend industry events.
• Show off what they?ve built on Demo Day to get feedback from peers and mentors

S Somasegar, Corporate Vice-President, Developer Division, Microsoft Corporation also graced the event with his presence, having traveled all the way from the Redmond HQ. He was excited about the recent surge of tech entrepreneurship in young professionals across the world that has been seen over the past few years. He also spoke about how India has and continues to be a great place for technology adoption, with software revenues in the country slated to cross $100 billion this year and over 235,000 jobs to be generated in this field.

And you can see that right here with the 11 startups in the Accelerator program.

AG: Apart from the support the Accelerator program is providing to these 11 startups, what else will be needed to help bolster an ecosystem conducive to innovation and thought leadership in India?

1) Awareness of what?s going on in the startup world, what kind of problems people are trying to solve and how they?re going about it, is the key to creating a novel solution to a relevant issue. This will also help startups find a USP and differentiate themselves from the competition and rise to the top.

2) Understanding what it takes to break into the VC circuit and becoming more savvy about how to approach investors and address their concerns properly is another area where Indian startups are lacking ? particularly when they?re not going through a structured program like Y Combinator. Hopefully we?ll get there in time.

AG: Apart from infrastructure and programs like the Microsoft accelerator, what else does India need in order to bolster an ecosystem that is conducive to innovation in the country?

SS: No one accelerator or similar program will do the trick ? these can only show people (and investors) the potential of these startups. What is needed is a sign of success; the more success stories we have in the startup ecosystem, the more faith and confidence others will have in this avenue, be they investors or innovators.

A few weeks ago, nude photos began to circulate of Carly Rae Jepsen, snapshots which allegedly featured the singer brandishing her pierced nipples. As it turns out, those photos weren?t real; the images were actually of a 21-year-old Internet model who apparently has no qualms about taking her clothes off in front of the camera on a fairly regular basis. Catastrophe averted, right? Unfortunately, things only got worse from there.

On July 23rd, an alleged sex tape featuring the ?Call Me, Maybe? singer made its way online, prompting the Canadian pop star to address the leak on her Twitter page. ?Crazy morning. Discovered that someone put up a sex tape claiming to be me. Ridiculous,? she explained. ?Obviously not me.? Obviously.

Just when the nude photos and sex tape rumors had started to die down, another rears its ugly head. This time, however, the photos could be real. According to TMZ, the singer?s laptop was hacked not too long ago, and several personal images were taken as a result. As per usual, someone is attempting to shop the images to various websites, though no takers have been announced as of this writing. Authorities, meanwhile, are on the case, and if reports are telling the truth, they even have a suspect already in mind.

Considering the guy who hacked Scarlett Johansson?s phone is facing all sorts of trouble, I?m assuming Carly Rae Jepsen?s electronic intruder will face similar charges for his actions. Prodromal Schizophrenia | Health and Fitness Excercise

Schizophrenia is one of the most common mental sicknesses that affect people in many parts of the world. The disorder is normally associated with breakdown of thoughts and being emotionally irresponsible. In many cases, an individual suffering from schizophrenia has delusions, hearing hallucinations and can also be paranoid. Later on the patient becomes socially and occupational dysfunctional. The disorder starts during the age of young adulthood and continues to the whole life of the patient. However, it is worth noting that schizophrenia patients have a shorter lifespan. Their lifespan is shorter by 0.3% to 0.7% when compared with that of normal persons.

Individuals suffering from schizophrenia lack contact with reality and they normally see and hear things that are not in existence. They tend to speak in strange ways and they always feel insecure with imaginations that they are being watched and someone might harm them. This makes patients of schizophrenia to isolate themselves and consequently become irresponsible people. They even refuse to eat or even bath and change their clothes. In some societies, people believe that people with schizophrenia are possessed by demons and consequently they are discriminated by their families and societies.

Schizophrenia is believed to be as a result of genetic, psychological, social, neurological and environmental factors surrounding the patient. According the psychological analysis of recent cases of schizophrenia, some of the modern lifestyles and recreational styles such as drug abuse have contributed greatly to worsening of the condition of patients suffering from this mental disorder. Economic challenges such as financial instability and unemployment are also making many young adults to develop Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia occurs in stages that continue advancing if no medical measures are taken. However it is worth noting that the disorder is more severe if it developed during the young age of an individual. The first stage of the disorder is the prodromal stage. This is the early stage of schizophrenia. At this stage it is not possible to diagnose schizophrenia since the symptoms are not specific. The next stage is the acute stage where the patient starts developing specific schizophrenia symptoms. This is the active stage of the disorder and the patient after some time the patient advances to the residual stage of schizophrenia has which similar symptoms with prodromal stage.

Although the disorder is chronic it does not mean that individuals suffering from schizophrenia cannot help recover from their illnesses. Research shows that with adequate support from the family members and community members, individuals suffering from schizophrenia can do things by their own and live responsible lives. All that they need is adequate counseling and medication. The condition is easily treatable if it is realized in the early stages when little damage has occurred in the brain.

Therefore parents should be very observant in order to determine when their children are developing schizophrenia so that they can give them the necessary therapy, medication and support. In order to check whether a person is developing schizophrenia, it is important to monitor whether the person like staying alone, he/she is motionless, irrational reasoning, speaks in a strange manner, over sleeping or lack of sleep and poor hygiene. When an individual develops the above symptoms, he/she is likely to develop schizophrenia. It is therefore important to visit a psychiatrist in order to seek further clarification and take the necessary medical measures.

Synthetic drug raids: 90 arrested, $36 million seized

The DEA and law enforcement agencies from across the US strike against synthetic drugs, arresting 90 people, confiscating more than $36 million in cash, and seizing millions of packets of drugs. NBC's Erika Edwards reports.

In the first-ever nationwide crackdown on the synthetic drug industry, law enforcement officers arrested more than 90 people, seized $36 million in cash and more than 4.8 million packets of synthetic cannabinoids Wednesday, authorities said.?

Agents also confiscated material to make 13.6 million more packages and 167,000 packages of synthetic hallucinogens, more commonly known as bath salts. In addition, materials to make 392,000 more packets of bath salts were seized.?

Operation Log Jam, a joint effort between the Drug Enforcement Administration and federal and local agencies, was conducted in more than 90 cities spanning 30 states, DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart said at a news conference Thursday.?

She said the raids included 29 manufacturing facilities at every level of the industry,?from small-scale operations to large warehouses.

"The web of connections between the suppliers and the?distributors and the?retailers?is enormous and it's complex," she said.?

Fifty-three weapons and $6 million in assets were also seized during the operation.

"We also found a number of people involved that are new to the drug business and have now been able to make connections with some of these more seasoned traffickers, and over 70 cases that DEA brought to the table, finding connections between them at all levels," Leonhart said.

In?addition?to the raids, criminal investigation specialists?with the Internal Revenue Service followed the money trail between the parties involved.?

"The major goal is to document the movement of money during the course of the crime, link between where the money comes from, who gets this," said Richard Weber, IRS?Chief?of Criminal Investigation.

Tobacco, smoke shops and adult stores cooperated with the Department of Homeland Security, said James Chaparro, acting director of ICE?s Office of Homeland Security Investigations.?

Law enforcement officers in West Palm Beach, Fla. arrested three men involved with Kratom Labs, the maker of the drug, ?Mr. Nice Guy.? NBC station WPTV?reported.? The station reported the drug is labeled as incense and was distributed throughout the country.

The owner of a store and warehouse in New York State was arrested after authorities swept in and seized synthetic cannabinoids and synthetic amphetamines that mimic the affects of marijuana and meth.

Officers said they had warrants to seize $400,000 of the man?s funds.?

Authorities?looked at mail?facilities that are used by?traffickers?to ship chemicals internationally and domestically.

"The more we can keep it out of the country, the more we can protect public safety," Chaparro said.?

Synthetic drugs, some known as bath salts, K-2, Spice and Vanilla Sky, have been?deceptively?marketed to young people, causing health problems and even death, Leonhart said.

"What's troubling is they're marketing to young people, young people have an outlet at these smoke shops, these retail outlets," she said.

Many of the drugs have a disclaimer warning against human consumption, but Leonhart said that's just a way to cover up the danger they pose.

"So little know about these substances, because of the dangers, you've seen the headlines, people who have committed murders, suicide, those calls to poison control."

She told reporters the problem of synthetic drug use is a bigger problem than most people think.?

"I put it up there with prescription drugs because they're emerging problems," she said.

Officials said calls to?poison?controls centers involving synthetic drugs in the last year have increased twenty-fold.

Chaparro said the problems with these drugs aren't limited?to the U.S.

Earlier this month, President Barrack Obama signed a bill that banned the sale, production and?possession?of some chemicals used for making many types of synthetic drugs. The bill added 15 synthetic drugs to the Controlled Substances Act.?

Synthetic drugs were initially thought to be a factor in an infamous case in Miami in May, when a naked man was fatally shot while chewing the face of a homeless man. But toxicology tests found he had only marijuana?in his system.?

Senate ready for symbolic showdown on tax cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate is bracing for a tax-cut showdown that is all about Democrats and Republicans showing voters their differences over taxing the well-off while accusing each other of threatening to shove the government over a fiscal cliff.

Senators planned to vote Wednesday on a $250 billion Democratic bill that would extend expiring tax cuts next year for all but the highest earners. Democrats will need 60 votes to advance the proposal, which they do not have.

It seemed unlikely that senators also would vote on a rival GOP plan that includes the best-off Americans in the tax reductions, a measure that was destined to lose.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, was ready to push legislation through his chamber next week that closely mirrors the Senate GOP measure. Republicans there introduced their bill on Tuesday, accompanied by another measure designed to speed work next year on legislation overhauling the entire tax code.

The clash in the Senate underscored how little the partisan tax-cutting duel had to do with actually passing a law this year. If anything, it highlighted how entrenched both parties' views were.

"Democrats will simply never agree we should hand out more tax breaks to the richest 2 percent of Americans while this economy is in the situation it's in now," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, sponsor of the Democratic bill.

"Our friends on the other side are practicing what could best be described as 'Thelma & Louise' economics," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said.

"Let's just march the whole country right off the cliff and see how that works out," McConnell said, referring to the movie's memorable climax.

If the two sides don't compromise, a massive $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts for 2013 would be triggered automatically in January ? the so-called fiscal cliff, which analysts say would jar the already weak economy.

Mostly following President Barack Obama's proposal, the Democratic bill would continue Bush-era tax cuts for everyone except individuals making at least $200,000 yearly and couples earning more than $250,000.

Those taxpayers would face top rates of 36 percent and 39.6 percent, respectively, instead of today's 33 percent and 35 percent. That would mean higher taxes for 2.5 million households, or 2 percent of all 140.5 million tax returns, according to 2009 data from the Internal Revenue Service.

Democrats say levies on the wealthy should rise because all income groups should contribute to deficit reduction. Republicans say those tax increases would burden the owners of many companies, leaving them less money to create jobs.

The Democratic bill also would let the top estate tax rate grow to 55 percent next year, with only the first $1 million in an estate's value exempted. That's an uncomfortable move for Democratic senators from farming and high-cost states.

Republicans would renew today's milder 35 percent top rate, exempting the first $5.12 million. Congress' nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation says the lower Democratic threshold would affect the owners of 46,700 estates projected to die next year ? a tiny percentage of Americans, but far more than the 3,600 who would be exposed under the GOP's terms.

Democrats would impose top tax rates next year of 20 percent on dividends and capital gains, two sources of income enjoyed disproportionately by the wealthy. The GOP top rate would be 15 percent.

The GOP bill ignores some tax reductions for low- and middle-income families that Democrats want to extend.

These include the American opportunity tax credit, worth up to $2,500 to cover college expenses; language making the earned income tax credit more generous for large working families and some married working couples; and a boost in the tax refunds some families get under the child tax credit.

All were part of Obama's 2009 stimulus bill, which Democrats say were meant to be permanent but Republicans say were only a short-term response to the recession.

Combined, those Democratic provisions would provide tax breaks averaging $1,000 to 25 million families, according to Treasury Department figures distributed by the White House.

Republicans also proposed bigger tax write-offs than Democrats did for small businesses taking deductions for the costs of buying some equipment.

It took years ? if not decades ? for her to get comfortable with her galactic status.

What drew her out was her San Diego-based education company, Sally Ride Science, which promotes science and math careers for girls and young women. She was determined to give back and she did, a thousand times over before her death on Monday at age 61.

The Soviet Union had been lofting female cosmonauts into orbit going back to the flight of Valentina Tereshkova in 1963, who orbited the Earth for almost three days.

Ride burst onto the public stage 20 years later when NASA chose her to be the nation's first woman in space.

With her catchy space-flying name and rock-solid science credentials, Ride inspired females the world over with her historic shuttle flight in 1983, five years after she and five other women gained entry to NASA's exclusively male astronaut club.

Some of those girls who looked up to Ride, way back when, went on to become astronauts themselves. Ride, a physicist, proved that women could be equal partners in space and that they, too, could aspire to such heights.

Ride was intensely private, though, and spurned the news media.

Her astronaut ex-husband, Steve Hawley, recalled Monday how she found herself "a very public persona," and "it was a role in which she was never fully comfortable."

"While she never enjoyed being a celebrity, she recognized that it gave her the opportunity to encourage children, particularly young girls, to reach their full potential," Hawley said in a statement.

In all, Ride flew just twice in space, both times aboard Challenger. A third shot at orbit vanished when the Challenger blew up. She found herself investigating the 1986 launch accident and in 2003 was back on a presidential panel looking into Columbia's destruction during its trip back to Earth, the echoes, as she put it, coming in loud and clear.

She lamented the fact that on the 20th anniversary of her record-breaking spaceflight, she was presiding over yet another shuttle tragedy.

Yet she said she'd jump at the chance to fly again on a shuttle, even after such horrific events, provided she could skip all the hard work that went into a mission.

There were times, though, that she wished she hadn't been first. Her female astronaut colleagues back then said they were glad it wasn't them.

The scrutiny, in and outside NASA, was off the scale. Ride was bombarded with sexist questions by reporters before her maiden voyage.

One newsman asked whether Ride wept when things went wrong. Another reporter asked if she planned to have children, and another wondered if she'd wear a bra in space. "There is no sag in zero-g," she replied.

At one point, Ride complained, "It's too bad this society isn't further along and this is still such a big deal."

She refused this reporter's request for an interview on the 10-year anniversary of her flight, but accepted a chance at reminiscing on the 20th.

"It was a huge honor," Ride said in an interview with The Associated Press in 2003. "On the other hand, it sure did complicate things. I'm the sort of person who likes to be able to just walk into the supermarket and not be recognized. I can do that most of the time now."

"A lot of people recognize the name. Very few recognize my face. That's very good," she said, laughing. "That is very good."

Ride was encouraging and highly supportive when astronaut Eileen Collins became the first female shuttle pilot and, consequently, commander back in the 1990s.

Collins was among the young women inspired by Ride's courageous journey and, like so many others, were stunned to learn of her death.

"Sally left us too soon," Collins said in a statement put out by NASA. "God Speed Sally, you will be greatly missed."

CT angiography speeds emergency diagnosis of heart disease in low-risk patients

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Incorporating coronary CT angiography (CCTA) into the initial evaluation of low-risk patients coming to hospital emergency departments (EDs) with chest pain appears to reduce the time patients spend in the hospital without incurring additional costs or exposing patients to significant risks. The report of a study conducted at nine U.S. hospitals appears in the July 26 New England Journal of Medicine.

"We found that the use of CCTA in emergency department evaluation of acute chest pain very effectively identified which patients did or did not have coronary artery obstruction, allowing clinicians to focus the use of resources on patients with heart disease," says Udo Hoffmann, MD, MPH, director of the Cardiac MR PET CT program at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and corresponding author of the NEJM article. "Although the use of CCTA added to the amount of diagnostic testing used in the evaluation process, compared with current standard protocols it significantly reduced length of stay without increasing costs."

CCTA combines advanced CT scanning with the use of intravenous contrast material to produce detailed images of blood vessels supplying the heart without the need for cardiac catheterization. Several previous studies, including an immediate predecessor to the current one, have indicated that CCTA can effectively distinguish chest pain patients that do not have coronary artery disease, but those studies all had such limitations as lack of a control group or limited analysis of factors like costs and radiation exposure. The current study -- ROMICAT (Rule Out Myocardial Infarction/Ischemia Using Computer Assisted Tomography)-II -- was designed to determine whether a CCTA-based evaluation strategy could improve clinical decision making at different hospitals across the country.

From April 2010 to January 2012, patients arriving at the participating hospitals' EDs for evaluation of chest pain who had no history of cardiovascular disease and whose initial tests -- ECG and measurement of the biomarker troponin -- did not clearly indicate a heart attack were invited to participate in the trial. Those who agreed to participate were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The control group proceeded with standard evaluation, with all diagnostic and treatment decisions being made by hospital physicians not part of the study group. The other group had CCTA as part of their ED evaluation, with the results being shared with attending physicians who, again, made all clinical decisions. Participants who were discharged from the hospital within 24 hours of arrival were called within 72 hours to assess their status, and all participants were called 28 days after hospital discharge and asked whether any return ED visits or rehospitalizations had taken place. Participant responses were verified by checking their medical records. About 1,000 patients completed the study, including the 28-day followup.

The investigators found that participants in the CCTA group had significant reductions in the amount of time from ED arrival until discharge either from the ED or after a hospital stay, with half of the CCTA group being discharged within 8.6 hours but only 10 percent of the control group being released so quickly. The amount of time until a diagnosis of heart disease was either ruled out or confirmed was also shorter for the CCTA group than for the controls, and more patients receiving CCTA were discharged directly from the ED rather than being admitted to an observation unit. The percentage of patients actually diagnosed with heart disease was similar in both groups at around 8 percent, and there were no missed diagnoses in either group.

Analysis of total clinical resources used from arrival to discharge indicated that CCTA participants had more diagnostic procedures than control group members, but the difference was not statistically significant. Neither were there any significant differences between groups in total costs through the 28-day followup in those participants for whom cost information was available. CCTA group participants were exposed to higher cumulative doses of radiation, but the authors note that recent studies have indicated that CCTA can often be successfully performed using lower doses and suggest that future studies test the utility of low-dose CCTA examination.

"It's very important to strive for the greatest efficiency in diagnostic testing, and in this study, additional testing was primarily carried out in patients found to have coronary artery disease," Hoffmann says. "There also were fewer adverse clinical events in those receiving CCTA, although the study group was too small to conclude that CCTA reduced those risks.

"Showing at a variety of clinical sites that CCTA is at least as good as standard ED evaluation without increasing costs elevates the procedure from one appropriate only for specialized settings to one that can be applied in many centers," he adds. "I'd really like to commend the commitment and teamwork of all the participating sites and departments, which was essential to the successful completion of this study." Hoffmann is an associate professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School.
