E-mail Marketing ? A Free Lunch With a Side of Spam ...

One of my favorite westerns is the ?Good, The Bad and The Ugly?. You may recall Clint Eastwood is one of the good guys in this movie. He personifies the western hero who comes to the rescue. On the other hand, you have Lee Van Cleef who plays Clint?s bad partner and Eli Wallach who plays the ugly partner. These three characters personified all the attributes of the western hero/anti-hero.

Since WWW stands for the Wild Wild West (aka world wide web), we can? think of e-mail as one of the good guys that helped firms promote their businesses on the Internet. During the past few years, however, e-mail spamming has become one of the ugly facts of life online.

The good news is that legitimate e-mail marketing is still alive and well.

It is also still mostly free. ?If you are like most business owners, you spend a considerable amount of time and money trying to create qualified leads for your sales staff. ?Having owned, operated and/or managed a number of thriving businesses over the years, I have come to appreciate the fact that many forms of lead generation provide great results. This includes leads generated by newspaper ads, coupons, yellow page ads and direct mail. While these forms of lead generation systems have proven to be effective at making our phone ring in the past, they have also proven time consuming, hard to track and expensive.

Take direct mail, for instance. ?With the cost of a first class stamp currently at 46 cents apiece, designing, constructing, stuffing and mailing a single circular from one business to another is going to cost you a minimum of $1. If you want to send your mailer to 1,000 businesses, this is going to represent a significant financial risk. Since the average rate of return on direct mail is a scant one to two percent, it isn?t exactly a sure thing as to whether your firm will break even on the campaign, let alone turn a profit.

However, sending the same offer or newsletter via e-mail will cost you little more than the time it takes to craft the offering. ?While there is a right way and a wrong way to go about creating a legitimate e-mail database, if you belong to networking groups, attend business functions, or in other ways come into contact with potential customers, getting permission to send them a monthly newsletter is as simple as asking permission. (This means you shouldn?t be branded as a spammer).

You can also include forms on your website, landing pages and social networks that will allow interested parties to sign up to receive your white paper, e-book or newsletter at the click of a mouse. ?Providing an easy way to let your prospects opt-in is just another way of connecting with an ever-growing audience.

Opt-in data bases are even better than purchased databases because these prospects want to receive your information. By automating parts of this process, you can touch prospects with less effort, lower costs and send out information and articles with greater frequency.

Creating a newsletter is a snap, since there are websites such as constantcontact.com, icontact.com and mailchimp.com that provide a low-cost service that includes everything you need to construct newsletters, invitations and offers, all via their template driven system.

Want to send out a birthday or holiday greeting to those on your mailing list? ?Try jibjab.com a website that contains hundreds of customizable e-cards and video cards that you can send to as many people in your database as you care to, for a flat $9.99 per year. ?We recently sent out a series of holiday video cards that were a huge success because they were humorous and because we added our staff?s headshots into the action. (If you haven?t seen this site you don?t know what you are missing.)

Best of all, all of the above-mentioned forms of online promotion are cost-effective and spam-free. ?If anyone receiving your newsletter wants to opt-out, all they have to do is click a link on the newsletter to be removed from your mailing list. Of course, that doesn?t mean that spammers do not exist.

What?s Scary! Really Scary!

The bad news is that there is no end in sight for spamming. Anyone who receives e-mail usually receives tens or even hundreds of unsolicited e-mails every day. ?According to cyber security firm Symantec, in 2012 72.89 percent of all e-mail received worldwide was considered spam. ?While most of us employ one form or other of spam filter to keep from being buried alive by spam, Symantec recommends a few other ways to reduce the amount of unwanted e-mails coming your way.

Some Simple Ways Stop E-mail Spam

This topic deserves a standalone blog post, so we?ll highlight the most important points only:

1. Do not give away your primary e-mail address when registering online. Use a secondary or special address for registrations.

2. Unless you are a salesperson, don?t include your e-mail address in the public profiles visible by everyone.

3.?Choose an e-mail address that is difficult to guess.

4. Never respond to spam e-mails such as asking to unsubscribe ? this will confirm your e-mail address validity rather than unsubscribe you.

5. Use a spam filter on your computer or in your corporate network.

6. Use the ?Report spam? option within your e-mail client so you never receive e-mails from this sender again.

7. Update your anti-viral software on a regular basis.

The problem with spam is there is no way to legitimately take your name off the spammers e-mail list.

E-Mail Spam ? The Ugly Truth

Not only are spammers raking in millions of dollars, so are the companies

that sell them their lists. A number of freeware and free apps are also used to collect e-mail address illegitimately. Some are even being used to infect the computers, tablets and Smartphone?s of unsuspecting consumers and business owners worldwide. This ugly truth is becoming more than a nuisance, it?s epidemic. ?It is threatening all our livelihoods. ?Governments have been woefully inadequate at protecting consumers. They have done a poor job of going after and prosecuting these spammers, hackers and cyber criminals. However, that doesn?t mean there is nothing you can do to defend yourself.

Is there anything you can do about unsolicited commercial e-mail?

Unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE) can come from various organizations, companies or be the product of ?computer viruses.? Companies or individuals can get your e-mail address from the Web. Other sources exist such as marketing lists that you sign up to that often get passed between companies. Unsolicited commercial e-mails generally also come from outside the U.S. Many of these UCE originate from countries like Ireland and those in European Union. This means it is quite difficult to stop the occurrence of UCE ? it is a global phenomenon. Generally, there is little you can do to prevent unsolicited commercial e-mails being sent to you.

Here is what you can do if you receive UCE:

In the vast bulk of cases of UCE?s e-mails, the e-mail headers are not valid.

*E-mail headers may be forged so replying to the e-mail merely results in you sending UCE to the innocent person whose e-mail address was forged.

*It is not advised to respond to an e-mail address to ?opt-out? of a list unless the address is from a recognized organization. These e-mail addresses may also be false or are used to confirm the unwanted e-mail was originally sent to a valid and active e-mail account.

*Responding to a website that supposedly lets you remove yourself from the list is also not advised. This is because once you access the website your details are logged. You could also you be exposed to pornography.

It is possible to determine the location (rather than the user or the e-mail address) from where the e-mail was sent. If you are able to look at the e-mail headers, you will then be able to determine the IP address of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) whose services were used to send the e-mail. Finding out exactly where UCE has come from can be difficult and time-consuming.

If you have determined the location of the sender of these mails, then it may be possible to send an e-mail to abuse@isp to complain ?about the e-mail. However, adult e-mails are not illegal in many countries including Ireland. If you do succeed in sending an e-mail complaint to abuse@isp and the material is illegal in the jurisdiction it originated in or in breach of the Acceptable Use Policy of the sender?s ISP, the ISP can disconnect the sender. However, it might be unable to tell you the name of the sender due to international data protection regulations. In many cases, the sender just moves to a different ISP and starts the process again.

Just like the characters in the movie, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, e-mail has a way of showing us the best and the worst the Internet has to offer. E-mail has saved billions of dollars for businesses worldwide. It has also cost billions in return. While e-mail can be a two-edged sword, it can also be a godsend to businesses looking for a way to increase their exposure. It has helped thousands of businesses survive the tough financial times that are upon us today. ?Just bear in mind that the when it comes to working the Web, only the good guys play by the rules.

Link found between insulin sensitivity, cells' powerhouses: Mice with mitochondrial mutation live longer, have less fat

Jan. 28, 2013 ? If findings of a new study in mice are any indication, it might be possible to fine-tune cellular powerhouses called mitochondria, tweaking one aspect to increase insulin sensitivity, reduce body and fat mass, and even extend life. Exploiting this target could one day lead to novel treatments for type 2 diabetes -- an endocrine system disease that affects 8 percent of the U.S. population. The research also points to promising new avenues of investigation in the biology of aging.

The study, reported in The FASEB Journal by authors from the School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio and the university's Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, found that diminished activity of a protein complex involved in mitochondrial function was associated with healthy changes in the mice. The median life span of this strain of mice is 20 percent longer.

Paradoxical

"This is an unexpected finding because you would think that something that decreases mitochondrial function would have a damaging effect, but instead we saw an increase in life span and beneficial metabolic effects," said lead author Deepa Sathyaseelan, Ph.D., research assistant professor of cellular and structural biology in the School of Medicine.

"The most important thing we noticed is reduced body weight and decreased fat mass in the mice," Dr. Sathyaseelan said. "We found that this decreased fat mass is due to increased fat utilization."

Fat utilization

Mitochondria produce an energy source called ATP that is necessary for the functions of life, everything from breathing to thinking. Additionally the cellular powerhouses are a major site of fat utilization, said study senior author Holly Van Remmen, Ph.D., professor of cellular and structural biology. Fat is an endocrine organ that performs many functions, and having it in the correct proportions is important for the body. Too much or too little fat is harmful.

The scientists also observed that mice with the mutation, in contrast to control animals, make greater numbers of new mitochondria. This is important because cells are constantly remodeling themselves, including mitochondrial overhaul.

Age-related

Mitochondrial dysfunction occurs with age and is associated with many age-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Dr. Sathyaseelan said the study "opens the door to new clues about how mitochondrial function might modulate insulin sensitivity," representing an important step for diabetes research.

Type 2 diabetes involves abnormalities with insulin, a hormone secreted by beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin helps the body store and use sugar from food, but in type 2 diabetes the body is insulin resistant, that is, it inefficiently responds to the hormone. With time the beta cells in diabetic patients start to die, resulting in less insulin to handle the demands. Levels of the hormone become progressively lower and sugar levels are increased progressively, damaging blood vessels and organs.

Understanding longevity

"I would also like to point out that these mice live longer," Dr. Van Remmen said. "For us they are very important from an aging standpoint. We want to understand how these animals can have added longevity, yet have a 60 percent reduction in a protein complex involved in mitochondrial function."

Dr. Sathyaseelan noted that life extension in association with decrease of the complex's activity is seen across species, including roundworms and flies. Shane Rea, Ph.D., assistant professor of physiology at the Barshop Institute, is one of the first to make this discovery in the worms.

The Barshop Institute team obtained the study mice from an Italian institute where studies are ongoing. Dr. Sathyaseelan recently received a two-year, $140,000 grant from the American Heart Association to understand how mitochondrial dysfunction is related to insulin sensitivity.

What's your sales strategy - Steve Gordon Marketing Systems

One of my clients is a sales professional. He?s been in his business for close to four decades.

Recently, he?s taken a young colleague under his wings.

His younger compadre is great at cold calling. (Maybe one of the best I?ve seen.)

He can walk into an office, befriend the gatekeeper and end up talking to the owner of the business?with relative ease (most would never get out of the car).

He?s a hunter. If he doesn?t knock on enough doors today AND isn?t skilled enough to make a sale in those tough conditions?he won?t eat tonight.

My client, by contrast, never cold calls.

He doesn?t go to see prospects, they come to him.

He diligently built his client and prospect list (one person at a time) over the many years?it now numbers around 5000.

He?s got a herd.

He consistently feeds his herd with great and valuable information.

He knows his herd by name.

?And they know him.

He built it without technology, before the Internet.

His herd kept him fed every day for nearly forty years.

And will feed him for many years to come.

If you?re hunting to eat, don?t stop (yet)?but start today building your herd. One name at a time. Before you know it, you?ll become a hurder?instead of a hunter.

And if you want to move faster, I can help you?click here.

Tiny Feathered Dinosaur Discovered

Researchers have discovered a new species of feathered but flightless little dinosaur from the Jurassic period.

Remains of the tiny beast, dubbed Eosinopteryx brevipenna, found in northeastern China suggest it was slightly less than a foot long (30 centimeters) and had a short snout and a short tail. Based on the dinosaur's small wingspan and bone structure, researchers believe it would have been able to run around quite easily, but likely couldn't whip up enough of a wing-beat to fly. The dinosaur also sported toes that would have been suitable for walking along the ground, the researchers added.

This birdlike dinosaur's plumage was much more reduced compared with the feathers on some of its contemporaries, which suggests that feathering was already diversified by the Late Jurassic, adapted to different ecological niches and purposes, the researchers said. (The Jurassic period lasted from about 199.6 million to 145.5 million years ago.)

"This discovery sheds further doubt on the theory that the famous fossil Archaeopteryx ? or 'first bird' as it is sometimes referred to ? was pivotal in the evolution of modern birds," researcher Gareth Dyke, a senior lecturer in paleontology at the U.K.'s University of Southampton, said in a statement.

"Our findings suggest that the origin of flight was much more complex than previously thought."

Archaeopteryx was long thought by many to have been the earliest bird. Discovered in 1860 in Germany, it is sometimes referred to as Urvogel, the German word for "original bird" or "first bird." But recent findings suggest late-stage Jurassic Archaeopteryx was actually just a relative of the lineage that ultimately gave rise to birds.

The new research was detailed in the Jan. 22 issue of the journal Nature Communications.

Understanding The Genre Of Internet Marketing | Beach Front Office

Once you decide to run your own business, you?ll find that certain things demand to be taken seriously. Internet marketing is one of them. There is not any way out of it. Especially when you are starting a small business, how you approach Internet marketing may be the single biggest factor in whether or not you succeed. The following tips can ensure that you get the most out of the efforts you devote to Internet marketing.

It is most important that your customers trust you and that you maintain their trust. When you design promotional material, only include information that can be backed up with facts. Be sure any claims that you make and testimonials you provide can be backed up by facts.

If you want to stand out as an authority to people who consider purchasing your product, try to actually interview authorities to post on your site. Make sure that you get their legal permission before publishing anything to avoid major legal repercussions. You could write articles based on your interviews and post them on article directories. In this way, you can increase your credibility, your traffic and your sales.

Looking for a way to market online? Not only does it make your site feel a lot more exclusive to visitors, but it also allows you to obtain your visitors? email addresses. Organize contests and give away free products to keep people interested. If there is something of value in it for them, customers are likely to be more generous with their email address.

Make sure to include content that is original and rich on your site. Search engines will rank your website higher if it contains unique and valuable content in the articles and your customers will be more favorable to your site as well.

Consider what your customers and visitors want to see when visiting your site. If you give them what they?re seeking, you should see your own marketing efforts create more sales. Ask for objective opinions on your site. You can ask for comments on web forums or from friends. Take notes and try to make the necessary changes to your site and strategy.

Don?t throw in the towel if you experience a few bumps on the road. Just think about the success that you could be missing by mere days if you give up. Have everything prepared before you start selling. At times, this can take a lot of effort. But remember, the harder you work now, the more it?ll pay off in the end.

When experimenting with the text you will use for your website, try out different emphasis tools. Tools like bold, italics, and underline are ways to make a word more important than the surrounding words. This technique can improve clarity in the message that you want to convey so that your audience can receive your message in the intended interpretation.

You should approach banner advertising differently, and go for a unique approach when designing one for your website. An exciting or interesting banner ad will attract more attention and inspire more clicks.

Take advantage of the many cost effective resources on the internet as a means to improve your marketing campaign. Consider joining up with an online forum, groups in your hometown, or borrowing books from your local library.

Be sure to include your signature on both personal and business e mails. On the internet, your email signature is the equivalent of your business card. You can increase traffic and revenue to your site by offering to show people your business via email.

Building a strong bond of respect with your customers is a good marketing strategy, and giving free gifts to paying customers is a great way to build those bonds. Pampering customers is just as effective online as it is in brick and mortar stores.

Make a plan for how you will market your webpage and the strategies you will use. Use the power of posts on a popular blog or networking on social media websites for inexpensive and effective promotion. There is an abundance of methods for attracting visitors to your website. Creativity helps when you are trying to set yourself apart from the rest.

Finding your niche is key to your website and online business. Someone who collects Star Wars action figures isn?t going to be interested in baseball cards. While you might sell a few, the point is, ultimately, that a person seeking baseball cards won?t be spending time in the same area as a person looking for Star Wars toys. So make sure that you targeting the right audience with your marketing efforts.

Marketing on the Internet is essential to any business today that wants to be successful. If you are conducting business online, it?s something you can?t ignore. Use these tips to make sure that your business stays viable on the internet, so that you are able to succeed and profit with the help of internet marketing.

Obama: Gun-control advocates have to listen more

Obama has called for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines and is pushing other policies in the wake of the mass shooting last month at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. (AP) ? President Barack Obama says gun-control advocates have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes in the debate over firearms in America.

In an interview with The New Republic, Obama says he has "a profound respect" for the tradition of hunting that dates back for generations.

"And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake. Part of being able to move this forward is understanding the reality of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas," he says.

Obama has called for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines and is pushing other policies following the mass shooting last month at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. In response, gun-rights advocates have accused Obama and others of ignoring the Second Amendment rights of Americans.

The president says it's understandable that people are protective of their family traditions when it comes to hunting.

"So it's trying to bridge those gaps that I think is going to be part of the biggest task over the next several months. And that means that advocates of gun control have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes," he says.

Has Obama himself ever fired a gun?

"Yes," the president says, "in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time."

His daughters don't shoot skeet at the presidential retreat in Maryland, he adds, "but oftentimes guests of mine go up there."

The interview appears in the Feb. 11 issue of The New Republic.

How to Boost Self Confidence by Not Being So Hard On Yourself

Need to know how to boost self confidence? The answer lies in learning to not be so hard on yourself. Read on to discover the key to boosting self confidence.

How to Boost Self Confidence by Not Being So Hard On Yourself 300x300 How to Boost Self Confidence by Not Being So Hard On Yourselfself improvement 2 confidence

How to Boost Self Confidence by Not Being So Hard On Yourself

Low self confidence affects us in every avenue of life, from meeting new people to job interviews, and while it?s easy to place blame elsewhere?on our critics, on the media etc.?in reality, the best place to look is to yourself.

While the criticism of others can affects our confidence, it?s the way we criticise ourselves which really hurts.

It?s not hard to see how hard we our on ourselves. Whenever we find ourselves in a pressure situation?be it at work, in social life or elsewhere?we often hear a little voice at the back of our minds saying ?You?re not good enough. You wont succeed. Why do you even try.?

This voice hurts. It kills our self esteem. If we are to boos our self confidence we need to learn to not be so hard on ourselves.

Sadly, it isn?t necessarily an easy job to silence our inner critic. We can?t just wish our negative selves away. The mind is complex. What we need is to separate negative criticism from objective criticism, to recognise the difference between when we are being fair to ourselves and when we are being too judgmental.

It?s also hard to believe that we are being too hard to ourselves. Most of us would never be so hard on others as we are on ourselves.

The following exercise will allow you to be as accepting to yourself as you are to others, to look on yourself in the same way you would look on those you love. This will naturally give your self confidence a boost in a big way.

?

EXERCISE to Boost Self Confidence by Not Being So Hard On Yourself?

PART 1: Recognising your crucial inner voice

Grab a piece of paper and use it to record negative things you say to yourself throughout the day.

Now, copy the list, but instead of writing ?I am . . . ? put it in second person, saying (for example) ?Paul is. . . ?

Now read the second list back to yourself and notice how you feel about each of the statements. As you read the list, make note of any new criticisms about yourself that come to mind and write those down too.

Exercise Part 2: Getting your critical inner voice out the way

Put your list of criticisms down to one side and put a new piece of paper next to it. On this piece of paper, you?re going to treat yourself as your closest friend would treat you.

Read through each piece of criticism one at a time and on the new piece of paper write a response to the attack, an objective and fair response to your attack, the kind of thing a friend might say. For instance, if an attack was, ?Paul is too lazy,? you might write, ?I have downtimes when I relax and recharge but that doesn?t make me lazy, I still get plenty of work done.?

It?s important to write this new list in FIRST person (using ?I? and ?ME?)

Perform this exercise every so often and you will boost your self confidence and stop being so hard on yourself.

Within a month of using this exercise once a week you will notice that you have built your self confidence a great deal.

S&P 500 on track for longest winning streak since '04

NEW YORK (AP) -- Stocks rose on Wall Street in afternoon trading Friday after Procter & Gamble and Starbucks posted strong earnings reports, putting the Standard & Poor's 500 index on track for its longest winning streak since 2004.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 53 points to 13,878 as of 2:21 p.m. Friday. The Standard & Poor's 500 advanced seven points to 1,502. The Nasdaq gained 20 points to 3,151.

The S&P 500 broke through 1,500 Thursday for the first time since December 2007, following a drop in claims for unemployment benefits that added to evidence that the labor market is healing. The index is headed for an eighth consecutive gain, which would be the longest winning streak since November 2004.

Procter & Gamble, world's largest consumer products maker, gained $2.49 to $72.91 after reporting that its quarterly income more than doubled. P&G also raised its profit forecast for its full fiscal year. Starbucks rose $2.40 to $56.97 after reporting a 13 percent increase in profits.

"Earnings are growing," said Joe Tanious, a global market strategist at JPMorgan. "The bottom line is that corporate America is doing exceptionally well."

Tanious expects corporate earnings to grow at about 5 percent over the "next year or two," and stock valuations to rise. Currently, the S&P 500 is trading at an average price-to-earnings ratio of 14, below an average of 15.1 for the last decade, according to FactSet data.

Apple continued to decline, allowing Exxon Mobil to once again surpass the electronics giant as the world's most valuable publicly traded company. Apple fell 1 percent to $444.26, following a 12 percent drop on Thursday, the biggest one-day percentage drop for the company since 2008, after Apple forecast slower sales. The stock is now $257.84, or 37 percent, below the record high of $702.10 it reached Sept. 19.

Apple first surpassed Exxon in market value in the summer of 2011, grabbing a title Exxon had held since 2005. The two traded places through that fall, until Apple surpassed Exxon in early 2012.

Stocks have surged this month, with the S&P 500 advancing 5.4 percent this month. It jumped at the start of the year when lawmakers reached a last-minute deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff." Stocks built on those gains on optimism that the housing market is recovering and the labor market is healing. The Dow Jones is up 6 percent on the year.

Deutsche Bank analysts raised their year-end target for the index to 1,600 from 1,575.

Companies will be able to maintain their earnings even if lawmakers in Washington decide to implement wide-ranging spending cuts to narrow the budget deficit, the analysts said in a note sent to clients late Thursday.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to its price, climbed 5 basis points to 1.91 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves.

? Halliburton gained $1.87 to $39.69 after posting a loss that was smaller than analysts had expected. The oilfield services company said fourth-quarter profits declined 26 percent to $669 million on increasing pricing pressure in the North American market and one-time charges from the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Wall Street had expected worse.

?Hasbro fell $1.45 to $37 after the toy maker said its fourth-quarter revenue failed to meet expectations because of poor demand over the holidays. The company plans to cut about 10 percent of its workforce and consolidate facilities to cut expenses.

? Green Mountain Coffee Roasters rose $1.10 to $44.88 after an analyst noted that sales of a competing coffee brewer introduced by Starbucks were getting off to a weak start.

One-in-five Brits to retire in debt in 2013 | Latest UK Debt News ...

Some 18 per cent of people retiring in the UK this year will do so with outstanding debt.

Research by Prudential highlights the scale of the problem facing many individuals who are looking to give up work this year, as the average amount of money they owe is ?31,200. However, this represents a significant decrease on the figure of ?38,200 from 12 months ago.

Tackling debt

However, it does show that progress is being made when it comes to tackling debt issues. For example, the typical amount owed by men has dropped from ?45,300 to ?33,800 in the past 12 months. This suggests people are increasingly recognising the need to take control of their financial situation.

Of those questioned as part of the Class of 2013 study, 56 per cent with debt owe money on their credit cards and 43 per cent have yet to clear their mortgages. Some 21 per cent have outstanding bank loans and 19 per cent are still using an overdraft, which highlights how unsecured borrowing is still being relied upon.

Making progress

Vince Smith-Hughes, Prudential's retirement income expert, said: "The fall in average debt owed by this year's retirees is a welcome sign that people are paying off some of the money they owe before they stop working.

"Debt does not have to be a major issue for people in retirement as long as they have sufficient income and realistic and manageable repayment programmes in place. But when people's finances are still under pressure ? it's important to ensure debt repayments do not eat into retirement incomes too much."

He added it is best if people pay off debt while they are still working, as this gives them a guaranteed revenue stream.

Geographical differences

Wales (26 per cent) was found to be the location with the highest proportion of those retiring with debts outstanding. This was followed by the West Midlands (22 per cent) and the south-west (21 per cent), while individuals in the Yorkshire and Humber were found to be in the best position (13 per cent).

These regional differences could point to the fact that consumers in certain areas are not taking the issue of debt management as seriously as others.

Seeking debt help

Moving forward, people should look to proactively clear their debt. One option worth considering is an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA), as it offers individuals the opportunity to reduce their monthly repayments.

Interest charges are typically frozen for the duration of the IVA ? which will usually last for five years ? while the amount of debt people are unable to repay within the IVA is written off at the end of it and it will stop unwanted contact from creditors.

The measure allows anyone to avoid bankruptcy, but it is still a serious undertaking. The decision to enter into the legally binding agreement is not one that should be taken lightly, but it does protect a family's home from being sold against their wishes.

How Search Engines Filter Out Spam-Filled Websites | MLM IS IT ...

How Search Engines Make Their Web Ranking Schemes Better

In website publishing there are do?s and don?ts that webmasters and Internet users alike should be aware of. These are meant to promote ethical online practices and encourage responsible Internet usage. But despite the efforts of search engine companies to filter out websites containing suspicious elements, why are there still many fraudulent activities online??

People have different reasons why they participate in malicious online practices like black hat SEO. One, there are webmasters who believe they can deceive search engines? algorithms. Two, there are webmasters who believe search engines do not really treat these activities a big deal. Three, the penalties for these activities vary and the kind of punishment imposed depends on the search engine company.?

This is why search engine companies find ways to improve and change their algorithms (usually without saying it) to ensure that only the most relevant website would appear on the result list. Examples of these are the recently implemented Google Panda and Penguin, both aiming to discourage webmasters from producing over optimized, spam-filled, and low quality websites.?

These recent updates in Google?s algorithms are quite unexpected, but for a trusted and widely used search engine it is only natural for Google to protect its web ranking schemes. This is one of the important guarantees Google could give to any company in Singapore that wants to submit a website to this search engine company. Any Singapore business owner aiming for online visibility should therefore look for SEO companies in Singapore that are aware of Google?s webmaster guidelines.?

However, there are times when a website contains spam elements without the owner realizing it. Why is this so? This actually happens especially when the webmaster you hire tends to over experiment. Webmasters are often guilty of doing it but a good one usually easily recognizes this as a mistake. Another probable reason is when some management system creates hidden text sections, which could be read by search engines as a spam attempt. ?

It?s important that when you choose an SEO company it should not only be professional but also updated with search engine algorithms. Everything about SEO is bound to change so choose an SEO SG company that can accommodate these changes.

Too Much Tea and Sweetbread: Separating the Relationship ...

img-feature-sp-emotionalfood

I?ve come up with a different way of thinking of things when it comes to dealing with the loss of my grandmother? and it?s this: When someone close to you dies it?s almost as if you can feel them rooting for you ? praying for you on the other side. ?And I can feel it most times.

So in one way, my grandmother (Vovo) is rooting for me with respect to reaching my overall goal in this Soul Project toward happiness and inner peace ? part of which includes getting down to a healthier weight.? And yet in another way, much of our time spent together was over food and drink ? an association I have to somehow reconcile.? When she initially left us on December 8th, 2012, I drank more tea than ever before.? I ate more bread than ever before.? Subconsciously, I think it made me feel closer to her.

My Grandmother - Vovo :)

My Grandmother ? Vovo ?

When I was younger I was brought to my Vovo?s by my father quite often.? And they were happy times mostly ? greeted by sweet steeping tea ? the way that only Vovo could do ? followed by the scent of fresh-from-the-oven sweetbread filling the air as soon you walked in the door.? It was pure love.? That?s how she expressed it at least ? through food and drink.? And as I got older, Vovo?s was a place I often visited to heal a broken heart ? and it was exactly as with the hit TV show, ?Big Bang Theory,? when Sheldon Cooper believed it be customary (passed down by his mother) to offer a hot beverage to a friend in distress.? It was soothing to the soul.

I suppose the time has come to tell the difference between all the tea offered in good times and in times of distress and the love of the person offering it?

The tea is an emotional trigger to more nostalgic times ? and it?s okay to remember her and think of her when I drink it.? But it?s more important to perhaps be as she was ? an open door to those who need it.? Offering whatever it is I have to give to make things better in whatever way I can ? just as Vovo did. With her strong Portuguese accent; sometimes struggling in how to say something in English in a way I could understand, her offering of tea and sweetbread was universally understood.? Again pure love.? So in separating the comfort of food from the offering of pure love, I can cope with how to re-prioritize this relationship with food and drink.? For the record, although I try, I can?t make my tea taste like Vovo?s.? And I don?t make sweetbread from scratch like she did either.? But I have other gifts I can give freely ? like she did. ?And perhaps in giving and focusing on others, the emphasis on food as a way of coping with emotions will eventually subside.

Miss you Vovo,

Love Nancy.

U.N. report finds torture of Afghan detainees, secret sites

KABUL (Reuters) - Almost a third of all detainees recently transferred to Afghan control have been tortured and Afghanistan's spy agency is operating secret facilities to avoid international scrutiny, a United Nations report released on Sunday said.

The findings could complicate the already thorny issue of how to manage the security transition ahead of the withdrawal of NATO-led troops from Afghanistan by the end of next year. Hundreds of detainees are being transferred from NATO to Afghan control as part of that transition.

Based on interviews with hundreds of detainees between October 2011 and October 2012, the 139-page report found "credible and reliable evidence" that more than half of those interviewed experienced torture or abuse.

Of the 79 detainees interviewed who were transferred from NATO to Afghan control during the 12 months, 25 were tortured, a rise of seven per cent over the previous year's report.

"The (Afghan) government's efforts to address torture and those of ISAF (NATO's International Security Assistance Force), although significant, have not resulted in a marked improvement and reduction in the use of torture," said the report.

"This raises concerns at a time when the government is taking over almost full responsibility for conflict-related detainees from international military forces."

The European Union said in a statement it was "deeply concerned" by the report and urged the Afghan government to "bring the perpetrators of such acts to justice".

A spokesman for the National Directorate of Security (NDS) referred Reuters to President Hamid Karzai's office for comment. Karzai's spokesman said a statement would be released on Monday.

The U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) interviewed 635 conflict-related detainees held at 89 facilities across Afghanistan by Afghan security forces and the NDS.

The report is the second by UNAMA to highlight widespread abuse within the Afghan detention system.

The United States and other ISAF nations halted transfers to nine Afghan-run facilities after the mission's October 2011 report alleged that hundreds of detainees -- including children -- held by NDS and the Afghan security forces were tortured or abused.

"This situation raises continuing concerns about states' legal obligations prohibiting them from transferring detainees to another state's custody where a substantial risk of torture exists," Sunday's report said.

NATO-led forces in Afghanistan have been handing over detainees to Afghan control gradually ahead of the withdrawal of most international forces.

The report outlines a harrowing list of fourteen methods of torture, including beatings with pipes and wooden sticks, twisting of genitals, extracting fingernails, electric shocks and threats of execution and rape.

The report also includes a statement by an unnamed NDS official in Kabul who confirmed the agency's use of torture and secret facilities for detainees.

"NDS has several secret places in which they detain and torture people," the official said.

The official said NDS intentionally moved tortured prisoners to their headquarters in Kabul to evade outside scrutiny.

"All tortured detainees were taken out of their cells that are located in one building and they were transferred to another building inside the same compound to hide them."

Real Estate Considerations: Getting Your Property Prepared For ...

When you?re relocating to a new home, one of the largest issues that you are likely to deal with is just how to ready your current home for relocating day. With so much taking place around you, it is going to be hard to figure out just what needs to be done, and what you do not actually have to take care of until right after your things are relocated by a moving company. Determining what you have to do, and the order in which you have to do it, can take a huge amount of tension off your shoulders whenever you are relocating. Here are some of the things that you have to think about as you prepare your current home for the day the moving organizations come to take your possessions away.

Obviously you have to think about packing first. With so many things inside your home, you will have to get a method in place so that you can make certain everything is protected and packed in a way that can make certain that it does not get damaged along the way. Getting some packing tips from moving specialists is a great way to go about this, and you can find those packing tips from a trusted website like movingcompanies.us. An excellent set of tips will tell you about producing a staging place, getting your packing materials together in advance, and selecting a good method of inventory and organization. If you adhere to the guidance provided, you should end up packed and ready, without much difficulty.

Another thing you will want to do to prepare your house for the move entails getting it in the condition it needs to be in for prospective purchasers to come look at it. When you are selling a home, you?ll need to clean it up so that individuals who may be thinking about getting it will see the good elements of the home and not as many of the negative elements. What does this precisely entail? You should always take a moment to clean the yard and cut the shrubbery, as well as wash off the home or touch up the paint. Inside, you need to touch up or paint the rooms if you are able, or at least clean any heavy trafficked areas. Think about cleaning the living area and places where prospective purchasers are likely to see first. Finally, make certain that you fix holes and damaged tiles or ripped carpets so that the potential purchasers see the best side of the home you might be wanting to sell.

Preparing for relocation day will typically require that you do numerous things, but these are some of the most significant. Regardless of why you might be relocating or where you might be relocating to, keep these things in mind so that you can approach the relocation process with a clear mind and a level head. Ultimately, not only will you minimize the tension that you face throughout the relocation process, but you?ll be able to get through the move without any of the bigger issues typically associated with relocation, home sales, or change in general.

Airstrike kills at least 7 near Syrian capital

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian government troops battled rebels in several areas outside Damascus on Sunday while regime warplanes bombed opposition-held areas around the capital, including an airstrike on one village that killed at least seven people, activists said.

Rebels seeking to topple President Bashar Assad have seized swaths of territory in northern Syria but have become bogged down in their push for Damascus, where government troops are still firmly in control. While the opposition fighters have established footholds in suburbs east and south of the capital, Assad's forces have kept them from advancing into the heart of the city and regularly hit them with artillery and airstrikes.

Much of the fighting Sunday was focused in areas east and south of the city, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, while government jets were bombing rebel areas.

An airstrike on the village of al-Barika, southeast of the capital, killed at least seven people, including five members of the same family, the Observatory said. Other activists provided the names of the dead, including the mother and father of the Shehadeh family and three of their children.

A video posted online said to be from the site showed dead bodies in the back of a pickup a truck and body parts and blood scattered in the street. "A whole family," an off-camera voice says, adding that they had fled to the village to escape violence elsewhere.

Another video posted online showed what activists said was the aftermath of an airstrike on the central village of Kafr Aya.

The video showed more than 10 wounded people being treated in a rudimentary field hospital. Some the wounded were children and appeared to be unconscious. A small baby was wrapped in a bloody white blanket with a badly wounded forehead.

The videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other activist reports.

The Syrian government does not respond to requests for comment on military actions.

The state news agency said Sunday that troops had killed "scores of terrorists" in two rebellious southern suburbs of Damascus. The government considers the rebels and its other internal opponents "terrorists" backed by foreign powers that seek to destroy Syria.

Also Sunday, the Observatory distributed two videos showing a rebel beating a captured government soldier with a rope.

The captive had been stripped to his underwear and was forced to raise his arms so he could be beaten on his sides, lifting his feet to receive blows on their soles.

At one point, a captor asked: "Who is your God?" To which the captive replies: "God." The captor then says: "No. Your God is Bashar Assad."

The Observatory's head, Rami Abdul-Rahman, said the videos were from the Jabal al-Zawiya region of Syria's northwestern Idlib province, though he did not know which of the area's rebel brigades filmed them.

Syria's government has been accused of war crimes throughout the conflict and at least 56 countries have co-signed a petition calling on the U.N. Security Council to refer the issue to the International Criminal Court. The Council, however, remains split.

Accusations of war crimes by rebels have grown increasingly common, and Abdul-Rahman said he had more than 70 videos of rebels torturing people and more than 20 of them killing captives.

Abdul-Rahman, who supports the rebels, said he opposes such actions by either side.

"We are dreaming of a new Syria and a new democratic country," he said, "We don't want a system where if someone kills me I can kill him."

Syria's crisis began in March 2011 with protests calling for political reform that the government quickly repressed. It has since evolved into a civil war with scores of largely independent rebel groups fighting the government across the country.

The U.N. said this month that more than 60,000 people had been killed since the conflict's start.

Researchers Develop a New Material Giving LEDs a Warm Nostalgic Glow

Having spent over a half-century living under the warm glow of incandescent light bulbs, it's understandable that consumers haven't been keen on adopting the cold bluish light emitted by energy-efficient CFL and LED bulbs. But researchers at the University of Georgia have developed a new single phosphor coating that finally lets LEDs produce that warm nostalgic glow we all know and love. More »

Deadliest volcano eruptions listed in database

Live on the East Coast? Thinking of escaping to a warm Caribbean island right now? You might want to check a new, open access database of the world's deadliest volcanoes first.

Though not intended as a travel advisory, the database does include several Caribbean volcanoes, such as Montserrat's Soufri?re Hills volcano, which sent pyroclastic flows down the mountain in 2010. (The rest of the island remains a lush resort.) However, researchers do hope the public learns more about volcanic hazards in their region by accessing the records.

"The long-term goal of this project is to have a global source of freely available information on volcanic hazards," principal investigator Stephen Sparks, a volcanologist at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, said in a statement.

    3. Doggy database gauges Labrador health
    4. Fisheries yet another victim of tsunami

Compiled by an international team from the University of Bristol with colleagues from the United Kingdom, United States, Colombia and Japan, the database provides free access to large volcanic events of magnitude 4 and greater. The scale is a relative measure of the explosiveness of volcanic eruptions. The 2010 eruption Eyjafjallaj?kull in Iceland was a magnitude 4; the May 18, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington was a magnitude 5; and when the Philippines' Mount Pinatubo blew its top in 1991, it was a magnitude 6 eruption.

"Magnitude 4 or greater eruptions are typically responsible for the most loss of life," geologist Sian Crosweller of the University Bristol, who led the database team, said in a statement. "The database's restriction to eruptions of this size puts the emphasis on events whose low frequency and large hazard footprint mean preparation and response are often poor."

The open access database, called Large Magnitude Explosive Eruptions (LaMEVE), will provide crucial information to researchers, civil authorities and the general public, the statement said.

There are nearly 3,000 volcanoes and more than 1,800 eruptions in the database, spanning 1.8 million years. The team plans to extend the records back to the beginning of the Quaternary period, 2.58 million years ago.

The Smithsonian Institution also maintains an exhaustive database of the world's volcanoes, called the Global Volcanism Program, but only for those active in the past 10,000 years.

The LaMEVE database is part of a major international effort called the Global Volcano Model, aimed at better understanding volcanic hazards and risk and reducing the loss of life and damage from future eruptions.

Facebook for Android update touts speedier photo viewing, ability to send voice messages

While the recently announced Graph Search has taken most Facebook-related headlines of late, let's not forget Zuckerberg himself said that mobile applications are undoubtedly one of the company's main focus areas. And although today's Android update isn't nearly as major as the one from last month, something tells us "likers" and "pokers" alike will still appreciate the new tidbits -- which include an option to share stories to Groups, Pages and Timeline, faster viewing / opening of photos, as well as a feature (relatively known, mind you) that allows for the sending of voice messages to friends straight from the app. Those eager to grab the update now should hit the Google Play link below, where the latest Android treats from the social network giant are only a mere click away.
