Oh God, Here Come the Private Security Drones

It was inevitable. Drones are in ever-wider use by the military, and some day they might deliver you food, but it looks like they'll also be the private, flying-camera spies for private companies too. That's what Japanese security company Secom is banking on with its new private security quadrotor. More »

Over the fiscal cliff: Soft or hard landing?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Efforts to save the nation from going over a year-end "fiscal cliff" were still in disarray as lawmakers returned to the Capitol to confront the tax-and-spend crisis. A tone-setting quotation was Democratic Sen. Harry Reid's assertion that the House under Republican Speaker John Boehner had been "operating with a dictatorship."

President Barack Obama flew back to Washington from Hawaii after telephoning congressional leaders from his Christmas vacation perch. Once back, he set up a meeting with leaders of both parties at the White House late Friday to make a fresh attempt to find a solution before Monday night's deadline.

A look at why it's so hard for Republicans and Democrats to compromise on urgent matters of taxes and spending, and what happens if they fail to meet their deadline:

___

NEW YEAR'S HEADACHE

Partly by fate, partly by design, some scary fiscal forces come together at the start of 2013 unless Congress and Obama act to stop them. They include:

? Some $536 billion in tax increases, touching nearly all Americans, because various federal tax cuts and breaks expire at year's end.

? About $110 billion in spending cuts divided equally between the military and most other federal departments. That's about 8 percent of their annual budgets, 9 percent for the Pentagon.

Hitting the national economy with that double whammy of tax increases and spending cuts is what's called going over the "fiscal cliff." If allowed to unfold over 2013, it would lead to recession, a big jump in unemployment and financial market turmoil, economists predict.

___

WHAT IF THEY MISS THE DEADLINE?

If New Year's Day arrives without a deal, the nation shouldn't plunge onto the shoals of recession immediately. There still might be time to engineer a soft landing.

So long as lawmakers and the president appear to be working toward agreement, the tax hikes and spending cuts could mostly be held at bay for a few weeks. Then they could be repealed retroactively once a deal was re

ached.

The big wild card is the stock market and the nation's financial confidence: Would traders start to panic if Washington appeared unable to reach accord? Would worried consumers and businesses sharply reduce their spending? In what could be a preview, stock prices in the U.S. and Europe dropped Friday on waning hopes that Obama and key lawmakers would reach an 11th-hour compromise.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has warned lawmakers that the economy is already suffering from the uncertainty and they shouldn't risk making it worse by blowing past their deadline.

___

WHAT IF THEY NEVER AGREE?

If negotiations between Obama and Congress collapse completely, 2013 looks like a rocky year.

Taxes would jump $2,400 on average for families with incomes of $50,000 to $75,000, according to a study by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. Because consumers would get less of their paychecks to spend, businesses and jobs would suffer.

At the same time, Americans would feel cuts in government services; some federal workers would be furloughed or laid off and companies would lose government business. The nation would lose up to 3.4 million jobs, the Congressional Budget Office predicts.

"The consequences of that would be felt by everybody," Bernanke says.

___

THE TAXES

Much of the disagreement surrounds the George W. Bush-era income tax cuts, and whether those rates should be allowed to rise for the nation's wealthiest taxpayers. Both political parties say they want to protect the middle class from tax increases.

Several tax breaks begun in 2009 to stimulate the economy by aiding low- and middle-income families are also set to expire Jan. 1. The alternative minimum tax would expand to catch 28 million more taxpayers, with an average increase of $3,700 a year. Taxes on investments would rise, too. More deaths would be covered by the federal estate tax, and the rate climbs from 35 percent to 55 percent. Some corporate tax breaks would end.

The temporary Social Security payroll tax cut also is due to expire. That tax break for most Americans seems likely to end even if a fiscal cliff deal is reached, now that Obama has backed down from his call to prolong it as an economic stimulus.

___

THE SPENDING

If the nation goes over the fiscal cliff, budget cuts of 8 percent or 9 percent would hit most of the federal government, touching all sorts of things from agriculture to law enforcement and the military to weather forecasting. A few areas, such as Social Security benefits, Veterans Affairs and some programs for the poor, are exempt.

___

THERE'S MORE AT STAKE

All sorts of stuff could get wrapped up in the fiscal cliff deal-making. A sampling:

? Some 2 million jobless Americans may lose their federal unemployment aid. Obama wants to continue the benefits extension as part of the deal; Republicans say it's too costly.

? Social Security recipients might see their checks grow more slowly. As part of a possible deal, Obama and Republican leaders want to change the way cost-of-living adjustments are calculated, which would mean smaller checks over the years for retirees who get Social Security, veterans' benefits or government pensions.

? The price of milk could double. If Congress doesn't provide a fix for expiring dairy price supports before Jan. 1, milk-drinking families could feel the pinch. One scenario is to attach a farm bill extension to the fiscal cliff legislation ? if a compromise is reached in time.

? Millions of taxpayers who want to file their 2012 returns before mid-March will be held up while they wait to see if Congress comes through with a deal to stop the alternative minimum tax from hitting more people.

___

CALL THE WHOLE THING OFF?

In theory, Congress and Obama could just say no to the fiscal cliff, by extending all the tax cuts and overturning the automatic spending reductions in current law. But both Republicans and Democrats agree it's time to take steps to put the nation on a path away from a future of crippling debt.

Indeed, the automatic spending cuts set for January were created as a last-ditch effort to force Congress to deal with the debt problem.

If Washington bypassed the fiscal cliff, the next crisis would be just around the corner, in late February or early March, when the government reaches a $16.4 trillion ceiling on the amount of money it can borrow.

Boehner says Republicans won't go along with raising the limit on government borrowing unless the increase is matched by spending cuts to help attack the long-term debt problem. Failing to raise the debt ceiling could lead to a first-ever U.S. default that would roil the financial markets and shake worldwide confidence in the United States.

To avoid that scenario, Obama and Boehner are trying to wrap a debt limit agreement into the fiscal cliff negotiations.

___

SO WHAT'S THE HOLDUP?

They're at loggerheads over some big questions.

Obama says any deal must include higher taxes for the wealthiest Americans. Many House Republicans oppose raising anyone's tax rates. Boehner tried to get the House to vote for higher taxes only on incomes above $1 million but dropped the effort when it became clear he didn't have the votes.

Republicans also insist on deeper spending cuts than Democrats want to make. And they want to bring the nation's long-term debt under control by significantly curtailing the growth of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security ? changes that many Democrats oppose.

Obama, meanwhile, wants more temporary economic "stimulus" spending to help speed up a sluggish recovery. Republicans say the nation can't afford it.

___

IT'S NOT JUST WASHINGTON

Seems like they could just make nice, shake hands and split their differences, right?

But there's a reason neither side wants to give ground. The two parties represent a divided and inconsistent America. True, Obama just won re-election. But voters also chose a Republican majority in the House.

Republicans and Democrats alike say they are doing what the voters back home want.

Neither side has a clear advantage in public opinion. In an Associated Press-GfK poll, 43 percent said they trust the Democrats more to manage the federal budget deficit and 40 percent preferred the Republicans. There's a similar split on who's more trusted with taxes.

About half of Americans support higher taxes for the wealthy, the poll says, and about 10 percent want tax increases all around. Still, almost half say cutting government services, not raising taxes, should be the main focus of lawmakers as they try to balance the budget.

When asked about specific budget cuts being discussed in Washington, few Americans express support for them.

___

THE COUNTDOWN

Time for deal-making is short, thanks to the holiday and congressional calendars. Some key dates for averting the fiscal cliff:

? Lawmakers didn't begin returning to the Capitol until Thursday, leaving less than a week to vote on a compromise before year's end.

? Obama returned Thursday from his Christmas vacation in Hawaii. The president asked congressional leaders to the White House Friday to try to resolve the fiscal cliff.

? If lawmakers reach Dec. 31 without a deal, some economists worry that the financial markets might swoon.

? The current Congress is in session only through noon Eastern time on Jan. 3. After that, a newly elected Congress with 13 new senators and 82 new House members would inherit the problem.

Melvin Guillard survives Jamie Varner slam but loses UFC 155 bout

Melvin Guillard and Jamie Varner staked a late claim to the UFC 155 Fight of the Night bonus with a bout that ended in a split decision. Varner won it on the judges' cards, 30-27, 27-30, 29-28.

Varner gained an edge early in the bout by tagging Guillard in the first round. Guillard showed good kicks, but couldn't escape Varner's takedowns for much of the bout. But the most frightening moment of the bout came late in the third round.

[Complete UFC 155 recap: Cain Velasquez mauls Junior dos Santos]

The two were scrambling on the ground for position when Guillard took Varner's back. Varner stood up, and with Guillard's head pointed to the ground, Varner slammed his opponent to the ground. Amazingly, Guillard was not knocked out or injured from the move. The fight ended seconds after, and the two embraced.

?This was a very emotional fight for both of us," Varner said after the bout. "After what happened a few weeks ago at the "TUF Finale" event, we were both ready to compete. I knew we would eventually get in the Octagon and squash our beef and I definitely feel that we did. I?m happy about my performance, I feel that I was able to dominate the fight wherever we ended up and I?m glad I got the win.?

Varner and Guillard were originally scheduled to fight during "The Ultimate Fighter" finale on Dec. 15, but illness kept Varner from the cage. Guillard was understandably upset about the delay, leading to trash talk.

BUT I DO HAVE A HUSBAND: Coming To Terms With Being "The ...

"I love hanging with you! It's like you don't even have a husband!"

I've been obsessing about these words lately. They were proclaimed by a good friend, who I don't actually hang out with all that often, due to the whole Pacific Ocean divide, but we "hang" on the phone semi-regularly.?

Said friend is single and staunchly so. She dates and flirts and conducts "sex-periments" on the fortunate (or not so fortunate) population of Los Angeles. Though there have been times she's confessed to wanting a man in her life, she's pretty content in her single life and the freedoms it affords.?

Now, I know what you may be thinking, "Who cares if one confirmed bachelorette says a kinda dummy thing to you?" You're right, I normally wouldn't care, but this isn't the first time a friend has said this to me. You see, I'm the Relationship Friend.?

I guess I'm what you'd call a Serial Monogamist. I don't know why I'm so embarrassed to admit this, but I haven't been single for more than a month in 10 years, and now I'm married. It was never a goal of mine to always have a boyfriend, it just happened. At this point, most of my closest friends have never known me without a Man Mascot.?

The thing is, many of my closest friends are single, dating or are in relationships much newer and shinier than my dusty old relationship. They are in a much different place, relationship-wise, than I am, and my fear has always been that I will become unrelatable, a relic, the one excluded from the party.?

I fully admit it, it's my own doing, I worked myself into a tizzy 10 years ago, and I'm still obsessing today. But because I'm generally a terrible person, I am going to blame Jeremy* as well.?

Jeremy* was the first guy I dated in college. My friends liked him, he was a "good guy," he made me laugh, he was older, he was wiser (?), and I broke up with him because he used the N-word (WTF).?

My "boyfriend = lame" neural pathways were forged when we spent our first Halloween together. Alone. In my apartment. With a very tiny TV and "Nightmare on Elm Street."

I love Halloween! I live for dressing up as barnyard animals and sexy inanimate objects! I LOVE Halloween parties! But you see, Jeremy did not. Instead of going to Kelly and Megan's Halloween Blowout Bash, he wanted to sit in my apartment with a bottle of wine and watch a horror movie. Just Jeremy, me, and my three-legged cat, Grace.?

At the time, I was so excited to have a boyfriend that I just went along with it and said some lie like, "Oh yeah, totally, those parties are all the same. Who cares?"

I watched my best friends get ready for the Halloween party, putting their costumes together, doing their makeup, buying booze and various fun party-time accoutrements. I felt left out, and when I mentioned it to a friend, she shrugged it off and said, "Whatever, you have boyfriend now, don't worry about it."

With those few offhanded words, my unwitting friend ignited a decade-long obsession with being it all: the best friend (always available, always up for everything, always ready to make my friends the center of my universe) and the best gal (my boyfriend's awesome girlfriend).?

For a period of time, I wore the "It's like I don't even have a boyfriend!" badge proudly and loudly. Realizing that now, it seems a little pathetic to me. None of my real friends gave me any indication that they preferred Single Louise, but in my head I had convinced myself that it was only because I had never given them a chance to get to know Relationship Louise.?

image

?I think she just called me a "girlfriend".?

I think I got really good at compartmentalizing. I had two lives. Single Louise flitted around, essentially behaving as a single girl, minus the dating. I stayed out late for days without my boyfriend, I went on trips with gals and gays, I was a really fun plus one for events. Relationship Louise celebrated anniversaries, went to work parties, visited family and had "couple friends." In retrospect, I don't know how any man tolerated dating me.?

The breaking point came when my then-boyfriend, now-husband, moved to Japan for a year to teach English and learn Japanese. Once I got over the intense loneliness and feelings of abandonment (I was so lonely that I read "Twilight"), I went out. Every night for a year. I had no one to be accountable to but myself and my cat.?

I made some of the best friends of my life that year. People I still love dearly and who have stood loyally by me through good times and bad. But they met me as Single Louise. Could they ever love me as Relationship Louise?

Whenever we were at a diner at 3 am, recounting the nights events, there was always a niggling fear in the back of my head, that voice whispering, "When he gets back, will this end?"

And when he did get back, I was thrilled. The fact that my boyfriend and I made it through a year apart deepened our relationship and cemented the fact that he should be my husband.?

But the transition period sucked.?

Basically I wanted to be two people. I wanted to be ready and willing to go out at midnight on a Tuesday, and I wanted to have someone to snuggle up in bed with at night. I didn't want my friends to write me off now that I had a BOYFRIEND. I should have given them more credit. They are still here and so is he. I'm a jerk face.?

I'd like to say I've found that perfect balance between wife and best friend. I haven't. However I have gotten a lot better at prioritizing and not being so obsessed with pleasing everyone. It's cliche, but it's true -- in trying to make everybody happy, I made nobody happy. Especially myself.?

I still struggle with feeling kind of lame now that I'm a WIFE. Anybody who knows me knows that I'm not the "settling down" type, but because I'm also intensely insecure, I'm terrified that the discovery that I'm married will lead people to believe I'm somehow less adventurous, independent or interested in their lives.?

Is anybody else out there like this? Does anybody else find themselves keeping two separate lives? Do you have issues with being a significant other?

*Name has been changed to protect the innocent. But if you want to start an Internet rumor that I dated Jeremy Renner 10 years ago, I'm totally OK with that.?

96% Sister

All Critics (51) | Top Critics (15) | Fresh (49) | Rotten (2)

"Sister" avoids sentimental indulgence. There's no room for wallowing in this spare, almost ascetic exercise ...

French-born director and co-screenwriter Ursula Meier balances the scenario's bleak, wrenching aspects with a stirring confidence in the redemptive power of love.

Seydoux perfectly captures the anger and self-defeat of ill-educated, hedonistic, man-chasing young women who live on the fringes.

L?a Seydoux fulfills Louise, and Kacey Mottet Klein, as Simon, is one more to join the pantheon of film's excellent child actors.

Haunting and sad. And absolutely worth seeing.

The chemistry between the two leads is a razor's-edge dance: feral, childish, tender and always complex.

We come away relieved and somehow chastened, the same way we might feel after having our pocket picked by a true artist.

The storytelling is exciting and the characters well-observed.

For the most part a distant film, Sister supplies a full behavioral experience that's riveting at times, with lead performances by Lea Seydoux and Kacey Mottet Klein communicating isolation in bravely vulnerable ways.

Emotionally engaging and impeccably crafted

Klein and Seydoux give such naturalistic performances that they're never overwhelmed by the spectacle.

"Sister" is loose and episodic, but held together with nicely sketched characters.

[A]voids bathos. . .reveals unexpected depth in a heartbreaking bond. . . Different classes conflict [in] adjacent spaces . . .in spare, realistic Dardennes' style.

Meier draws out wonderfully naturalistic performances from her young stars, with Mottet Klein particularly good as the young roustabout Simon ...

It comes over like a subtle short story and is well acted.

Meier's portrait of Simon ... is richly atmospheric and never sentimental.

An enigmatic, heartfelt account of a vulnerable young boy's yearning for a better life.

Most intriguing is how the writers and director have transformed what's essentially a rather dark, bleak story into something involving and emotionally resonant, all without ever turning sentimental.

It is an interesting and well-made movie, though with an uncertain ending.

Sister gradually reveals pattern in its tapestry of everyday life.

An expert piece of storytelling with a host of strong character turns and thematic depth to burn.

Google trials shipping, flight and event tracking in search results

It's not quite Google Now in your browser, but the latest search experiment from the internet giant certainly blurs the line between its mobile personal assistant and its desktop search product. The company has been testing showing Gmail-based results in your search sidebar for months, but now it's actually parsing those snippets for relevant information. If you opt in to the trial, simply searching for "my orders" will spit out a history of your recent purchases along with tracking info. You'll get similar cards (yep, cards, just like in Now) if you search for "my events," "my flights," "my hotel reservations," or "my restaurant reservations." Slowly but surely Google is becoming not just a way to search the web, but an indispensable way to track all of the disparate chunks of information that make up your daily life. Police: 1 blackjack dealer stabs another in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A fight between two female blackjack dealers at a Las Vegas Strip resort sent one to the hospital and the other to jail.

KSNV-TV reports (http://bit.ly/12HtOle) 50-year-old Brenda Wilson is accused of stabbing the other dealer Friday night in a blackjack pit at the Bellagio hotel-casino.

The incident comes a week after an Illinois man shot and fatally wounded an ex-girlfriend in the hotel lobby at the Excalibur resort on the Strip, then killed himself there.

Wilson was booked into jail on charges of battery with a deadly weapon and mayhem with substantial bodily harm.

Authorities say the victim, whose name wasn't immediately released, was taken to the hospital with deep facial cuts. Her condition was unknown.

Police couldn't confirm whether the two dealers were working at the time.

I suggest you to follow me both on Twitter, and most importantly,?Daily Newsletter (submit your email on the right)?so that you don't miss out any posts. Newsletter are delivered 2 hours before opening bell rings.Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ: ZNGA) is showing support from MA(50). The candlestick is getting smaller and smaller until today it widened yet traded with very little volume. I think it is time for reversing the downward movement. Tomorrow, should we see a green candlesticks, I am confident that the stock we be trading at $2.73 again in no time.?
American Apparel Inc. (AMEX: APP) is back again. Today's rise breaks above the channel formed since this month. The stock is trying to get back above MA(200) now. The action on MA(50) is interesting too. It seems that it might not crossover with MA(200). CMF crossed above zero. Closing above 1.04 could be great entry. Before that, the chart is still have bearish written over it.
P.S.: Trading AMEX stocks use up quite a lot of margin buying power.?Tellabs, Inc. (NASDAQ: TLAB) getting close to special dividends now. TLAB jumped 3% today and crossed above MA(200). MACD is?holding?up quite well. Both Slow STO and RSI make lows above 50 level, which I usually find it quite useful to predict action. I still long TLAB.Tronox Inc. (NYSE: TROX) is showing some correction after the jump three days ago, yet, holding above MA(50). BBands widening and yesterday closing price did not leave upper band, which still give bullish sign to the stock. MACD crossed above zero yesterday.Walter Investment Management Corp. (AMEX: WAC) traded as low as $41.40 today but closes at $44.48, which is an inverted hammer and suppose to be a good sign. However, due to the high volume and the point where it shows up, I think it is more like a head and shoulder pattern. I think a close below MA(50) will send the stock into freefall. Bubbles of Mischief ? Future Raid Pets

This week?s Shared Topic was brought to us by Effraeti ? a subject right up my alley.

While running through MC, BWL, AQ40, and Naxx over the weekend, I got to thinking?

If a future patch adds more raid-dropped pets like those introduced in 5.1, what pets would you like to see? What raid and boss would they be available from?

When I think back over the last eight months, my Pet Battling activity is still going strong. So with my classic raid collection complete, there are a few (ok, more than a few) other raid bosses I?d love to see as future pets.

David Wygant: This Holiday Season, Love Thy Ex

A word of advice: 'tis the season to love your ex.

How did that make you feel when I said that? Let's explain things in a better way.

All of us are divorced. Most of us have children. And who are holidays about, anyway? It's about the kids.

Whether your child still believes in Santa Claus or your child just really enjoys having the family together because they are coming home from college -- whatever age your kid is -- Christmas is still magical.

The other day I was on Netflix and I realized they don't have "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". Netflix on Demand is kind of a waste of money and a waste of time. So I went over to Amazon and ordered Santa Claus is Coming to Town. And I played it for my two-year-old daughter for the very, very first time.

She was so happy. And after she saw Santa, she looked at me and said, "Daddy, I want a dollhouse for Christmas."

"What else do you want Santa to bring you?"

"I want Santa to bring me lots of things. I can't wait to go see Santa Claus."

It reminded me how beautiful Christmas really is. The magic of Christmas is the belief in the season.

Now, I know that a lot of you celebrate Christmas for the religious aspects, but a lot of us don't. For a lot of us, Christmas is just magic. It's going back to childhood and remembering what it's like to feel Santa for the very, very first time, and to realize that Santa is going to buy you all of these great things.

It's the anticipation. It's the build up. And feuding exes shouldn't ruin it.

This Christmas, make it about the kids. Whatever bone you have to pick with your ex, whether your divorce is final, whether your divorce is still in process, whether you're still battling over money or whatever it might be, put it aside for now and make Christmas about your children.

Kids anticipate this time of year, especially the little ones who still believe in Santa. The older ones are looking forward to Christmas holiday, seeing their aunts, their uncles, and grandparents.

They don't want to hear mom and dad fighting over the Christmas ham again. They don't want to see you miserable and unhappy. It's time to put your children first.

Forgive your ex. The best thing to do this holiday is to put the divorce away for a bit. Put it aside and just co-parent together during this holiday time. It's going to make the kids happy.

I was a child of divorce and I remember my first Christmas without my parents together. I remember the whole "which parent can buy the better present and win you over" game they played. It didn't make me feel good, and I was 19.

So get on the same page with your ex and figure out how you can still keep Christmas magical for your kids, regardless of whether the magic is gone between the two of you.

Artificial intelligence helps sort used batteries

Dec. 19, 2012 ? Research at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden and Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden has resulted in a new type of machine that sorts used batteries by means of artificial intelligence (AI). One machine is now being used in the UK, sorting one-third of the country's recycled batteries.

'I got the idea at home when I was sorting rubbish. I thought it should be possible to do it automatically with artificial intelligence,' says Claes Stranneg?rd, who is an AI researcher at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology.

Stranneg?rd contacted the publically owned recycling company Renova in Gothenburg, Sweden, who were positive to an R&D project concerning automatic sorting of collected batteries. The collaboration resulted in a machine that uses computerised optical recognition to sort up to ten batteries per second.

The sorting is made possible by the machine's so-called neural network, which can be thought of as an artificial nervous system. Just like a human brain, the neural network must be trained to do what it is supposed to do. In this case, the machine has been trained to recognise about 2,000 different types of batteries by taking pictures of them from all possible angles.

As the batteries are fed into the machine via a conveyor belt, they are 'visually inspected' by the machine via a camera. The neural network identifies the batteries in just a few milliseconds by comparing the picture taken with pictures taken earlier. The network is self-learning and robust, making it possible to recognise batteries even if they are dirty or damaged. Once the batteries have been identified, compressed air separates them into different containers according to chemical content, such as nickel-cadmium or lithium.

'For each single battery, the system stores and spits out information about for example brand, model and type. This allows the recycler to tell a larger market exactly what types of material it can offer, which we believe may increase the value through increased competition,' says Hans-Eric Melin, CEO of the Gothenburg-based company Optisort, which has developed the machine.

This means that besides the environmental benefits of the machine, there are commercial benefits. Today the collection and sorting companies are actually paying money to get rid of the batteries. But Melin thinks that real-time battery data could spark a new market for battery waste, where large volumes are traded online.

So far, the company has delivered two machines -- one to Renova in Gothenburg (where half of all the batteries collected in Sweden are sorted) and one to G&P Batteries in the UK. The interest in Optisort and its machine is rising and Stranneg?rd, who founded the company, is very happy his idea is turning out to work so well in the real world.

'This is sparking further research and development so that we will eventually use artificial intelligence to sort all types of waste,' he says.

The 12 Dos And Don'ts Of Gadget Gift Giving

There is no doubt that electronics is the season?s hottest gift category. But there?s more to giving a gadget than just clicking ?buy? on the first device you see.

A gadget gift, just like any other gift, goes over best when there?s thoughtfulness and consideration behind it.

After all, if you?re plunking down cold hard cash, you don?t want to waste that money just filling the back of someone?s closet, do you?

So as you parse all the gadgets, gizmos and doohickeys on the sales floors this month, bear the following in mind.

The Dos And Don?ts of Giving Tech

DO check out reviews.?

If you?re starting from scratch and not sure what to get, hit up some reviews and rankings.?Some sites offer terrific coverage on the hottest gadgets. (Like, erm ? shameless plug ??this one right here.)

You?ll want to narrow down your gift idea to a category at least, and then do a little digging to see which products or brands offer the best features and/or best build quality. That will give you a few choices to price-check against sales and holiday promotions.

DON?T just pick up whatever?s the most popular or critically lauded.?

Yes, you want to check reviews. But no, you don?t want to grab whatever?s on the top of the list and call it a day. Technology is not ?one size fits all,? and everyone has differing tastes and requirements. So?

DO think about the recipient?s personality or needs.?

Consider your loved one?s situation. For instance, if he or she is tech-challenged, you?ll want a gadget that?s super simple to use over another complicated one, even if it does have more features.

Or maybe the friend is an avid gamer who?d appreciate a souped-up graphics card over a Kindle. So, yes, put some thought into it. But not too much thought (see below).

DON?T give ?personal electronics? unless you know it?s on the recipient?s wish list.?

Thinking about a roll-away alarm clock, because your girlfriend?s always late? Or a?nose hair trimmer for Dad? (Or worse, Mom?) Perhaps something from the thinly veiled adult section of the store for that pal who just can?t loosen up? Stop. Just, please. Stop it right now.

Unless you know your loved one specifically wants a particular item, the personal electronics gift category is a risky bet. You want to spread joy, not make a tactless commentary, so it?s best to avoid these types of presents.

DO get the best tech you can afford, but not because you think the recipient SHOULD use it.?

He prefers Windows over OS X, or she likes iOS over Android. So what if you don?t??This isn?t the time to show people the errors of their ways. No one likes a present that comes with a lecture.

DON?T buy for yourself.?

You sneaky thing, you. You know he?d rather read than stream video to his TV, or that she can?t stand giant phones. But you go ahead and buy it anyway, knowing full well that you?ll be the one who winds up using the device. Shame on you. It?s a clever tactic, but not very generous, so how about getting a present s/he might actually love, mmmkay?

DO purchase devices that are returnable.?

Be sure that your item is returnable or at least exchangeable, so read the fine print on any promotions or ask the sales clerk about the store policy on that item.

DON?T forget gift receipts.

They don?t show the purchase price, which keeps things classy, but they still allow the easy exchange of merchandise.?And if you?re buying for several people all at once, be sure to ask the sales associate for separate ones.

DO gift your old gadgets? but not for the holidays.?

So what do you do with that old phone now that you?ve upgraded? Well, unless you want to look like a cheapskate, you certainly don?t slap a bow on it and stick it under the tree. While legacy devices are great to pass along to someone who?d still use them, it?s tacky to give them as holiday presents.

The only exception is if you?re cash-strapped and your kid is too young for an expensive current model. Otherwise save the leftovers for later.

DON?T overlook age-appropriateness.?

This one?s a no-brainer: So you know digital cameras are on the menu, but maybe a DSLR might be too much for Grandpa. Or a pricey point-and-shoot shouldn?t land in the mud-happy hands of your young cousin, who?d do better with a best buy from Toys ?R? Us instead of Best Buy.

Gift-giving themes can be fun, but make sure the presents are appropriate for the age, ability or lifestyle of the recipient.

DO bundle a device with accessories or app gift cards.?

If there?s a little left in your shopping budget, why not splurge on some extras and make it a merry occasion for that lucky gift-getter? Nothing says ?Wow!? than breaking open a bundle of techtastic awesome.

DON?T keep friends and family in the dark about your plans.

First of all, you want to head off the possibility of duplicated gifts. Second, if he or she is already thinking about splurging for a phone, tablet, heart-rate monitor or whatever that you already bought and wrapped, you?ll need some back-up help ? people who can discourage the person from buying that right now and making your gift redundant.

Third, your loved ones may kick in and pick up some other bits that would go well with your device or bundle, making for an even more tricked-out feat of gift-giving.

Like with any other presents, a little thought goes a long way with gadget gifts. After all, if you didn?t care, you?d be giving a pair of socks or a dried-out dime-store fruitcake. But you decided on a device, accessory or software, hoping to thrill someone with your tech-savvy and generosity.

And with these tips, you won?t disappoint. But hop to it! There?s not much time left in the shopping season!

AMD reveals Radeon HD 8000M laptop graphics processors

Had you been cruising these pages in the early hours of this morning, you'd know that the very first laptop to contain AMD's next generation of discrete graphics chips was quietly put up for sale over in Germany. The chipmaker has now confirmed that this machine -- the Asus Vivobook U38DT -- is indeed shipping, with a Trinity APU and hitherto unknown Radeon HD 8555M GPU on board. At the same, it's made a few promises about what the new discrete graphics components are capable of. These claims include the typically confusing graph above, which at first glance may appear to show an 8000M-series chip trebling the performance of NVIDIA's Geforce 650M (of 15-inch Retina MBP fame), but which actually suggests a 20-70 percent lead over the six-month-old competitor -- and with no information about power consumption to help us make a proper judgment. There are some straightforward factual details too, thank goodness, and you'll find them right after the break.

How You Can Help Your Local Animal Shelter

During the holiday season when we look back at everything we have to be thankful for, many times our thoughts turn to how we can share our good fortune and help others. For those of us with four-legged family members, it can be especially gratifying to help your local animal shelter or rescue. However, even if you have the best of intentions, sometimes it can be difficult to figure out just how to best provide a helping hand.? Here are some simple steps you can take to get started:

  • Because most people prefer to help dogs and cats in their own community, the first step is to locate a local shelter.? PetFinder has a database of animal welfare organizations that you can search by zip code, or you can try VolunteerMatch which allows you to enter your zip code along with keywords to find volunteer opportunities in your area.
  • Before you contact a shelter or rescue, decide how you want to help, and how much time you can commit. Ways you can help most groups include assisting with fundraising efforts, adoption events, fostering a dog or cat, spending time with the shelter animals grooming, cleaning, socializing, etc. See if you can use any of your special skills or hobbies to help out; for example, if you?re an ace photographer, perhaps you can help take great photos of adoptable pets.
  • If you aren?t able to give of your time and energy, you can always help with a monetary donation, or a donation of needed office, cleaning or pet supplies. Check with the shelter to see if your donation will be tax deductible, and to see what items are most needed. The website for most animal welfare groups usually includes a ?wish list? of items that will be most useful.
  • Your next step is to take a deep breath and call or send an email to the volunteer coordinator at your local shelter or rescue group. Keep in mind that many groups are staffed by volunteers and they can be extremely busy, so if you don?t receive an immediate response, don?t despair. Once you?re in touch, ask them about ways you can help, as well as the times of the day when they can use volunteers.
  • Now all you have to do is work out how you and the shelter can best work together. When I volunteered at my local cat rescue shelter, I first spent an afternoon checking out the facility and interacting with the staff and the cats to make sure this would be a good fit.

So just get started?while you are helping the pets in your community, you are likely to find out that the one that benefits most is you!

Regulator of healthy life span uncovered

Dec. 17, 2012 ? A new series of studies in mouse models by Mayo Clinic researchers uncovered that the aging process is characterized by high rates of whole-chromosome losses and gains in various organs, including heart, muscle, kidney and eye, and demonstrate that reducing these rates slows age-related tissue deterioration and promotes a healthier life span. The findings appear in the December 17 online issue of Nature Cell Biology.

"We've known for some time that reduced levels of BubR1 are a hallmark of aging and correspond to age-related conditions, including muscle weakness, cataract formation and tumor growth," says co-author Jan van Deursen, Ph.D., of Mayo Clinic. "Here we've shown that a high abundance of BubR1, a regulator of chromosome segregation during mitosis, preserves genomic integrity and reduces tumors, even in the face of some genetic alterations that promote inaccurate cell division. Our findings suggest that controlling levels of this regulator provides a unique opportunity to extend healthy life span."

Researchers studied two lines of transgenic mice, one with moderate expression of BubR1 and the other with high expression. Outcomes of a series of experiments showed that mice with high expression of the gene were dramatically effective in preventing or limiting age-related disease compared to those with moderate expression and especially to wild type mice.

The findings were significant. Only 33 percent of these high expressing mice developed lung and skin tumors compared to 100 percent of the control group. BubR1 overexpression markedly reduced aneuploidy (a state of having an abnormal number of chromosomes), which causes birth defects. Other results showed these mice were protected from muscle fiber deterioration, that they were better performers in treadmill tests, that they had much reduced levels of renal sclerosis, intestinal fibrosis and tubular atrophy -- all signs of aging. They also showed higher cardiac-stress tolerance and resistance to age-related retinal atrophy.

Co-author Darren Baker, Ph.D., of Mayo Clinic, says the findings show BubR1 and its associated regulators are "promising targets for a broad spectrum of aneuploid human cancers and key age-related disorders that dictate human health."

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health grant CA96985, the Ellison Medical Foundation, the Noaber Foundation and the Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Aging.

Co-authors include Meelad Dawlaty, Ph.D.; Karthik Jegnathan; Liviu Malureanu, M.D.; Janine van Ree, Ph.D.; Ruben Crespo-Diaz, Ph.D.; Santiago Reyes, Ph.D.; Lauren Seaburg; Virginia Shapiro, Ph.D.; Atta Behfar, M.D., Ph.D., and Andre Terzic, M.D., Ph.D.; all of Mayo Clinic; and Tobias Wijshake, and Bart van de Sluis, Ph.D., of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. Drs. Baker and Dawlaty are joint first authors. Chronic worriers at higher risk for PTSD, research finds

Dec. 17, 2012 ? People who worry constantly are at greater risk for post-traumatic stress disorder, according to new Michigan State University research published in the journal Psychological Medicine.

Many people experience traumatic events such as the death of a loved one, being assaulted or witnessing violence, but only a small minority develop PTSD, said study author Naomi Breslau, a professor of epidemiology at MSU.

"So the question is, 'What's the difference between those who develop PTSD and the majority who don't,'" Breslau said. "This paper says people who are habitually anxious are more vulnerable. It's an important risk factor."

Breslau reached that conclusion by analyzing data from a decade-long study of about 1,000 randomly selected people in southeast Michigan.

At the start of the study, participants answered 12 questions that gauged what psychiatric experts call neuroticism, a trait marked by chronic anxiety, depression and a tendency to overreact to everyday challenges and disappointments. They then had follow-up assessments at three, five and 10 years.

Half the participants experienced a traumatic event during the study period. Those who scored higher on the neuroticism scale as the study began were more likely to end up among the 5 percent who developed PTSD.

Breslau said the findings are particularly persuasive because the study assessed participants' personalities before they had a traumatic experience, rather than measuring neuroticism among those who already had PTSD.

"There have been studies of neuroticism and PTSD, but they've all been retrospective," she said. "We're never sure of the order of things in a retrospective study. This study sets it in a clear time order."

Breslau said there isn't much that can be done to prevent PTSD, but her findings may help doctors recognize people at the highest risk and respond accordingly when they experience trauma.

"We need to be concerned about people with previous psychiatric disorders if there's some kind of catastrophe," she said. "The main thing is that doctors have to look after their patients, ask them questions and get to know them."

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Google Maps (for iPhone)

Our short national nightmare is over. People can stop heading to the wrong cities, falling off of warped bridges, and dying of heat strokes while using Apple Maps. iPhone owners running iOS 6 can now restore Google Maps to its prominent place on the home screen for free, thanks to a new, standalone Google Maps app that's available in Apple's App Store. Also, for the first time, it brings parity with Android by including a beta version of voice-enabled car navigation. Just as Google Maps Navigation works well on Android phones, Google Maps now does the same thing on iPhones; the only difference is that you have to download it first. It's not the best at car navigation, but thanks to everything else it offers, it's an easy Editors' Choice for iPhone GPS?apps.

Interface, Map Graphics, and POI Search
In some ways, the new Google Maps app is actually smoother, more attractive, and more fun to use than the previous version. Fire it up and you'll see a 2D overhead map view of your current location. The little blue icon still pulses with light when it has a lock on your GPS location, but it's more subtle now, without the rings that emanated from it in earlier versions. Across the top is a search bar. To the right is a small icon that gives you fast access to your saved destinations, both from here and your regular Google desktop account.

Map and satellite graphics look fantastic on the iPhone 5's large Retina screen, with 3D buildings appearing in Manhattan as you zoom in closer, thanks to the new vector-based rendering engine. You can tip the view over from 2D to 3D even in pedestrian mode. Google's famed Street Views for major cities make an appearance as well. Tap the small vertical bar of dots on the bottom right, and a panel opens up giving options for real-time traffic, public transit, satellite view, and a shortcut to the Google Earth app (if you have it installed). Highlight a point of interest, and Google will display its identity on screen. Then you can swipe up to see the location, reviews, contact information, and other relevant data.

Inputting destinations for navigation is simple; you tap the navigation icon near the top, which looks like a junction arrow that splits in two directions. You can type in anything: a street address, a point of interest, a search term, whatever you want?and then select it from the resulting list below. The app also presents you with alternative routes in each mode, with a visual of how they look on the map, so you can choose whether you'd want to take a given highway or subway. There's no way to tell it up front if you want the fastest or shortest routes, or to avoid highways, though. Regardless, during my tests, everything I searched for resulted in the correct answers, just as you would expect from Google.

Car Navigation, Other Features, and Conclusions
Many iPhone users prized Google Maps for its solid, real-time pedestrian navigation, but new to this version is a voice prompt-based mode that you can use when behind the wheel. It takes a few extra taps to begin voice navigation. Once on the road, the car navigation view is a little sparse compared with what you see on TomTom, Garmin, and other car-focused navigation apps. For example, there's no current speed, road speed limit display, or configurable speed limit alerts. There's also no way to display the trip ETA, the current time, and the distance remaining simultaneously.

Audio prompts are excellent, with a smooth voice, correct pronunciation, and detailed, complete sentences at just the right times. When Google first launched Google Maps Navigation on the Motorola Droid in 2009, voice prompts were a total mess, so this is a clear victory. Google has done a lot to add photo-realistic junction views and destination photos to its navigation, but there still aren't enough of them. In fact, if there's no photo available of a highway exit, you don't see any lane assistance at all?either a 3D rendering or 2D lane arrows?which is disappointing.?

All of the routes I tested in Manhattan and in New Jersey were accurate and worked well. As always, Google Maps data is super-accurate; it even knew that you couldn't access the Lincoln Tunnel from West 34th street traveling east, and that I had to go up to West 40th Street. Real-time traffic information was also on the mark, for the most part, although saying there are "delays" in New York City in the afternoon is like saying there are stars in the sky at night.?In addition to voice navigation, Google Maps now has bike directions and Zagat reviews, and it caches maps offline in case you're outside of a cellular coverage area.

Overall, aside from some issues with the 3D interface while driving, Google Maps is a must-download for iPhone users, whether you're on foot or behind the wheel. There's no iPad version yet, unfortunately, though I imagine Google will rectify that sooner rather than later. Just as I've said in our Google Maps Navigation?review, it does a nice job with car navigation, but dedicated car nav apps still offer more, and work more like standalone GPS devices. I wouldn't automatically discount every paid navigation app from consideration, but make no mistake: Google Maps for the iPhone is a comprehensive GPS and voice navigation solution for walking, driving, biking, and taking public transit. I can't help but wonder if Apple even needs to bother fixing its own maps anymore.
