World News - Police evict Occupy London protesters from camp

Dylan Martinez / Reuters

A bailiff removes a tent from Occupy protesters encampment in front of St Paul's Cathedral in London early Tuesday morning. The eviction started just after midnight, carrying out a court order after protesters lost an appeal.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

LONDON -- Police and bailiffs worked through the night and into the early hours of Tuesday morning to evict protesters from the Occupy London encampment beside the city's landmark St Paul's Cathedral.

There were around 20 arrests, according to breakingnews.com editor David Wyllie, who was on the scene and posting updates on Twitter.

But there was no violent resistance as the eviction went on, with officials quickly clearing debris on the ground to prevent them from being used as weapons. Public access was restricted prior to the operation and a number of local roads were closed, Wyllie reported.

Tents were unceremoniously thrown into large trash cans and crushed as the owners looked on, he said. Protesters said vanloads of police arrived at the site to carry out the eviction.

The local authority, the City of London Corporation, confirmed the eviction was under way by bailiffs, backed by police.

The urban camp had been set up as part of an international movement inspired by the U.S. Occupy Wall Street against what the activists say is corporate greed and economic inequality. Protesters had been camped outside the 300-year-old church since October.

The eviction comes months after authorities dismantled Occupy encampments in many U.S. cities

Movement not over
BBC correspondent Jeremy Cooke reported from the scene?that the mood was largely peaceful early on.?

"This has always been a peaceful process, and it has never looked like (it was) turning into anything other than that," said poet and protester Catherine Brogan, according to The Guardian.

Demonstrators said the end of the camp would not mean the end of the Occupy movement.

"It's only tents and materials the injunction applies to so I think some protesters will be back here tomorrow," Gary Sherborne told The Associated Press.

Later, the mood turned tense as police closed in on a group of remaining protesters who had chained themselves to some wooden pallets to make a?"last stand," witnesses on The Guardian live stream and Wyllie reported.

Protesters were dragged from the platforms and several key protesters leading the chants were restrained by officers holding onto each limb.

Police removed one activist from a tree overlooking the site.

Roads opened to traffic shortly before 5 a.m. (12 a.m. ET) as local authority workers hosed down the site removing the last traces of the protesters from the area.

Last week a court rejected an Occupy London challenge to an eviction order, ruling that the right to protest did not justify a semi-permanent camp on a public pathway.

"We regret that it has come to this but the High Court Judgment speaks for itself and the Court of Appeal has confirmed that Judgment," said a press release from the City of London Corporation.

"The City of London Corporation is ensuring vulnerable people are being helped and supported to find appropriate accommodation in partnership with Broadway, a charity for the homeless," it said.

HTC One X hands-on

HTC One X

If you thought HTC's phones of the latter half of 2011 were good, wait till you get a load of the first half of the 2012 crop. The flagship model for HTC's new "HTC One" line is the HTC One X. Code named Endeavor, it's sporting a 4.7-inch 720p Super LCD 2 display that looks as good as you can imagine (especially in the horrible lighting we had to endure).

Android Central at Mobile World Congress The back, home and multitasking buttons are capacitive and aren't a part of the screen, so you actually get more real estate than you might expect. That's a double-edged sword because it can make it that much harder to reach from corner to corner. The phone is made of a special polycarbonate -- basically meaning it's plastic, but it's bad-ass plastic. It feels pretty good, though it is a tad slick.

The One X is either running a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, or a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, depending on whether it's got an LTE radio. (AT&T's version will rock Snapdragon.) The 1800 mAh battery on the One X is not removable.

The real stars of the show, however, are the 8MP rear camera with HTC's new ImageSense technology, and Sense 4.0. The former means you can take better pictures (and take them faster). And the latter means you get more of a stock Android experience, while retaining that feeling that you're using an HTC. The menus are nicely skinned, and widgets go on the home screens more like previous versions of Android and Sense, and not like default Ice Cream Sandwich.

We've got hands-on pics and video after the break.

Major changes needed in how Americans use our energy

To the Editor:

News commentators (and others) lament the increasing price of gasoline at the pump, implying that no one has control over it except those who stand to gain from the increased price approaching $4 per gallon or more. In fact, the price of gasoline at the pump has not kept pace with our fairy-tale inflation, a 7 percent growth rate, controlled by the Federal Reserve system by periodic ?tweaking? necessary to maintain a continually growing economy. Maintaining that rate of growth supposedly doubles the nation?s value every 10 years. Thus, strictly maintained, the 1960 25-cents-per-gallon price of gas would have doubled every 10 years to be $8 in 2010 (which it was in Europe). If maintained, the 2020 price for gasoline would be $16!

We complain now about it hovering around one-fourth that price! Unlimited inflation is at the root of current economic stress. It clearly illustrates the hopelessness and fairy-tale nature of unrestrained economic growth: the ever-increasing dollar value of a finite resource. Infinite economic growth on a fixed or limited resource base will come to an end whether we like it or not, whether we do or do not reduce our dependence on oil. Foreign oil is not the problem: it is oil, fossil fuels. Period. That is why we need to make rapid and major changes to our use of energy for the benefit of everyone, assuming we can.

The Communication Blog: Politeness as an Interpersonal ...

This brief discussion of politeness as an interpersonal relationship theory comes from my Interpersonal Communication Book but I thought that those using Interpersonal Messages or Essentials of Human Communication might also find this relevant.

?

Another approach to relationships looks at politeness as a major force in developing, maintaining, and deteriorating relationships. Politeness theory would go something like this: Two people develop a relationship when each respects, contributes to, and acknowledges the positive and negative face needs of the other and it deteriorates when they don't.

Positive face is the need to be thought of highly, to be valued, to be esteemed. In more communication terms, respect for positive face entails the exchange of compliments, praise, and general positivity. Negative face is the need to be autonomous, to be in control of one's own behavior, to not be obligated to do something. In more communication terms, respect for negative face entails the exchange of permission requests (rather than demands), messages indicating that a person's time is valuable and respected, and few if any imposed obligations. It would also entail providing the other person an easy "way out" when a request is made.
Relationships develop when these needs are met. Relationships will be maintained when the rules of politeness are maintained. And relationships will deteriorate when the rules of politeness are bent, violated too often, or ignored completely. Relationship repair will be accomplished by a process of reinstituting the rules of politeness.
Politeness, of course, is not the entire story; it's just a piece. It won't explain all the reasons for relationship development or deterioration but it explains a part of the process. It won't explain, for example, why so many people stay in abusive and unsatisfying relationships. Its major weakness seems to be that politeness needs for specific individuals are difficult to identify--what is politeness to one person, may be perceived as rude or insensitive to another.
And, perhaps not surprisingly, politeness seems to be relaxed as the relationship becomes more intimate. As the relationship becomes more intimate and long-lasting, there is greater license to violate the normal rules of politeness. This may well be a mistake, at least in certain relationships.? Our needs for positive and negative face do not go away when a relationship becomes more intimate; they're still there. If the definitions of politeness are themselves relaxed by the individuals, then there seems little problem. There is a problem when the definitions--relaxed or original--are not shared by the individuals; when one assumes the acceptability of something generally considered impolite as o.k. while the other does not.
When people in relationships complain that they are not respected, are not valued as they used to be when they were dating, and that their relationship is not romantic, they may well be talking about politeness. And so, on the more positive side, this approach offers very concrete suggestions for developing, maintaining, and repairing interpersonal relationships, namely: increase politeness by contributing to the positive and negative face needs of the other person.

Cognitive rehabilitation improves brain performance in patients with MS

Cognitive rehabilitation improves brain performance in patients with MS [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 22-Feb-2012

Radiological Society of North America

OAK BROOK, Ill. In a new study published in the March issue of Radiology, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) shows that cognitive rehabilitation changes brain function and improves cognitive performance in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS).

"These results prompt the use of specific computer-based rehabilitation programs to treat deficits in selected neuropsychological domains in patients with relapsing-remitting MS," said the study's lead author, Massimo Filippi, M.D., professor of neurology at the San Raffaele Vita-Salute University and director of the "BrainMap" interdepartmental research program and the Neuroimaging Research Unit, Department of Neuroscience, Scientific Institute San Raffaele, Milan, Italy. "They also suggest that fMRI might provide useful metrics to monitor the effects of rehab in MS."

MS is a nervous system disease affecting the brain and spinal cord. MS damages a material called the myelin sheath that surrounds and protects nerve cells. This damage disrupts messages between the brain and other parts of the body, leading to symptoms such as muscle weakness, coordination and balance difficulties, numbness, problems with vision, memory loss and other cognitive issues. MS affects women more than men and often becomes symptomatic between the ages of 20 and 40.

In relapsing-remitting MS, the most common type, patients experience a series of attacks followed by partial or complete disappearance of symptoms. The interval between relapses can range from weeks to years.

Cognitive impairment affects a large proportion of patients with MS in the areas of attention, information processing, executive functions, memory and visual-spatial abilities. Cognitive dysfunction impacts a range of activities, including work, driving and social integration.

For the study, Dr. Filippi and colleagues recruited 20 patients with relapsing-remitting MS. Patients were randomized into two groups of 10. The first group received a 12-week program of computer-assisted cognitive rehabilitation of attention and information processing and executive functions, and the second (control) group received no cognitive rehabilitation.

Aspects of the rehabilitation program included a day-planning task, which employed realistic simulations of a set of scheduled dates and duties to address the patient's ability to organize, plan and develop solution strategies; and an attention task requiring the patient to simulate driving a train, carefully observing the control panel of the train and the countryside while encountering several distractions at increasing levels of difficulty.

All of the patients underwent neuropsychological assessment and MRI exams at baseline and after 12 weeks. As compared to their performance at baseline, the patients in the treatment group improved in tests of attention and information processing and executive functions. The fMRI results showed modifications in activity in several brain regions in the rehabilitation group, compared to the non-rehabilitation group. These fMRI modifications were correlated with cognitive improvement.

Analysis after cognitive rehabilitation found no structural changes in the gray matter or normal-appearing white matter of the brain in the treatment group.

"The findings demonstrated that computer-assisted cognitive rehabilitation in patients with MS results in an improvement of the trained cognitive functions," Dr. Filippi said. "However, the structural integrity of the brain's gray matter and white matter showed no modifications in these patients, suggesting an impairment of structural plasticity."

Buildings and Grounds wins Big Cypress Employee Fun Day ...

By Naji Tobias

BIG CYPRESS ? Down, set, hike!

Seven Tribal department teams faced off in a flag football tournament for the right to claim Toilet Bowl honors during Big Cypress? Employee Fun Day inside the Big Cypress Rodeo Arena on Jan. 27.

?Councilman Tiger wanted to have this event to boost the morale of all the employees we have here in Big Cypress,? said Council?s Office Coordinator Marlin Miller, who served lunch for the employees with the help of Tribal Council representative assistants Noella Dyan O?Donnell and Wovoka Tommie. ?We wanted to do something for the employees and let them know we appreciate them for all the work they do for us.?

In what was an exciting finish to the Big Cypress Council-sponsored initiative, Buildings and Grounds squeaked by Recreation/Rodeo in an overtime thriller to take home the Toilet Bowl trophy with a final score of 14-7. Buildings and Grounds? final record was 4-0, while Recreation/Rodeo?s final record was 4-2.

After two five-minute halves, both teams went into overtime. Buildings and Grounds used seven plays to march its way to the end zone, thanks to a perfect 15-yard touchdown pass from Joel Cavazos to Victor Becerra that proved to be the tournament clincher.

?It felt great to step up for my team,? said Becerra, who was named the Toilet Bowl MVP. ?I threw a pick early in the game that caused a touchdown, so I needed to redeem myself there. We just threw it up and I just got open to be in position for the catch.?

The final game between Buildings and Grounds and Recreation/Rodeo seemed to be poised for a rubber match early on, as Becerra threw an interception right into the hands of Recreation?s Frank Moody in the first half. Becerra was one to watch, having made four touchdown catches and two defensive interceptions.

Buildings and Grounds faced a 7-0 halftime deficit because of Becerra?s thrown interception, but they found their way back into the game after Guillermo Rodriguez caught a touchdown pass from Cavazos. Cavazos? talent shined in the eight touchdown passes he made in the four games he played.

At 7-7, all Recreation/Rodeo needed to do was throw for another score to be one win away from the title. Unfortunately for Recreation/Rodeo, Dustin Lowman threw a pick to Rodriguez close to the end of regulation, with his team having to play defense the rest of the way. Lowman was a force to be reckoned with, having made 16 touchdown passes in the six games he played.

Big Cypress Tribal senior Mitchell Cypress, who did not play in the tournament, said he liked what he saw at the Rodeo Arena.

?I?m a little bit too over-the-hill, so I just wanted to watch the youngsters play the game,? Cypress said. ?It was fun to see them all having a good time out there.?

Council, who sponsored the event, ended with a 2-2 final record. Council?s team was led by the Tribal trio of Cicero ?Tebow? Osceola, who threw five touchdown passes; Charlie Cypress, who made four touchdown catches; and Big Cypress Tribal Council Rep. Mondo Tiger, who threw two touchdown passes.

The tournament?s remaining teams were: defending Toilet Bowl champions Utilities, who ended with a 1-2 final record; Housing , with a 1-2 final record; Museum/Tribal Historic Preservation Office, with a 0-2 final record; and Community Care for the Elderly, with a 0-2 final record.

Historic Charleston Revisited | Back Road Journal

Historic Charleston, South Caroline With One Of Its Many Steeples

The southern town of Charleston, South Carolina is so lovely that it deserves multiple visits to really get to know all of its? hidden charms. That is exactly what my husband and I did on our road trip down to Florida and back. You may recall that we had stopped for one day ?in Charleston?but the lure of the picturesque city was calling us back as we headed north to our home in New England. Once again we stayed at the French Quarter Inn and were greeted with Champagne as we checked in.

French Inspired Bedroom

After unpacking and settling in to our French inspired ?bedroom,?we headed out to explore the city. The hotel is within walking distance of most everything that you want to visit and is right across from the restored markets.

Making Baskets For Over 70 Years

While walking through the market, I stopped and spoke with a woman who has made lovely sweetgrass baskets for over 70 years. The making of baskets has been handed down through her family from generation to generation. Her baskets are both beautiful and unusual.

Beautiful Handmade Sweetgrass baskets

Right outside the market you can find horse or mule draw carriages that will take you on a guided tour of the historic section of Charleston, stopping along the way to explain about the history of the beautiful homes and buildings from a century ago.

Carriage Ride Through Historic Charleston

It was a damp and gray day but Charleston is such a wonderful city for walking that we ?decided to take a stroll so that we might peak down alleys and through garden gates. We discovered small hidden gardens,

Hidden Garden

some public with statues or fountains, others were private and very intimate.

Peek Through the Wrought Iron Gate To Find Hidden Garden

Walking always builds up your appetite, so we headed back to the hotel to enjoy the free wine and cheese reception and meet some of the other guests staying at the hotel. ?Then it was upstairs to our room to change for dinner, a short walk away.

Tonight?s dinner reservation was at FIG. The initials stand for Food is Good and believe me it was. Chef Mike Lata was named Best Chef of the Southeast by the James Bread Foundation in 2010. The well known restaurant is renowned for its quality ingredients sourced from local farmers and growers. The restaurant feels like a combination of a neighborhood caf? and a little chic bistro.

Appetizers were classic yet served in a stylish and creative way. We started with a Wagyu beef carpaccio and chicken liver p?t?.

Beef Breast Carpaccio, Pecorino And Crispy Potato

Main courses were a delicious slow baked snapper with artichoke-cauliflower grenobloise ?and a suckling pig confit, with saut?ed greens, roasted beets and mustard jus.

Slow Baked Snapper With Yukon Puree, Artichoke And Cauliflower Grenobloise

The next day, we were off again to explore the city. Unfortunately it was another drizzly day, but that couldn?t stop us. Thankfully the rain stopped and even though we didn?t have beautiful sun, we enjoyed our day of discovery.

Back Of The Old Custom House

The Circular Church

Historic Building With Wrought Iron Balcony

Historic Daughter Of Confederacy Building

We had made a reservation at Husk for lunch. This is probably one of the most well known restaurants in town and it didn?t disappoint.

Husk Restaurant

Husk is noted for its farm to table meals. After walking in the front door you see a chalk board that has a list of ingredients used in the days cooking and the farms they came from.

Smoky Wings With Charred Onion BBQ Glaze

We ordered to items from their snacks section of the menu to start?grilled crostinis with pimento cheese and country ham and?SC smoky wings with charred onion BBQ glaze and Sea Island benne.

Vermillion Snapper With Carolina Gold Rice And Tomato Bacon Pole Beans

Lunch was SC shrimp and grits with braised peppers and onion and Surry sausage an a Vermillion snapper with Carolina gold rice and tomato bacon braised pole beans. We had to have two of their famous sides for the table?bacon cornbread and country ham braised greens. We would go back to Husk just for another helping of sides. They were the best we have ever had.

Our evening started with cocktails at The Gin Joint and should have ended there with some small plates. The Gin joint specializes in pre-Prohibition spirits. Their cocktails are made with the best quality ingredients and spirits. They are so particular about making the best cocktail that they juice their own fruit and make their own syrups. The many paged cocktail menu is full of slings, smashes, fizzes and fine small batch sipping spirits.

James Creates The Best Cocktail You Will Ever Have

A Proper Old Fashion And Fitzgerald FizzAfter sampling two of their delicious cocktails, I can see why they have been written up so often in both local and national magazines and papers.

I don?t like to criticize restaurants?that is up to local reviewers. I have decided to make an exception and say that my tip of the day is not to go to Amen Street restaurant. The she crab soup was like eating a bowl of bland thick gravy. A salad of marinated tomatoes, hearts of palm and gorgonzola was sent back because it was uneatable. Oysters on the half shell were fine but shucked in the kitchen instead of out front. This has been the only restaurant on our entire trip that we left without ordering a main course. I don?t think I need to say more.

As much fun as we have had on our two brief stays?we are already looking forward to our next trip to Charleston, South Carolina. The historic city, the delicious food and the warmth of the people will keep us coming back for many years to come.

This photo released by the Iranian President's Office, claims to show Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, second left being escorted by technicians during a tour of Tehran's research reactor centre in northern Tehran, Iran, Wednesday Feb. 15, 2012. In defiant swipes at its foes, Iran said Wednesday it is dramatically closer to mastering the production of nuclear fuel even as the U.S. weighs tougher pressures and Tehran's suspected shadow war with Israel brings probes far beyond the Middle East. (AP Photo/Iranian President's Office)

(AP) ? Facing international sanctions over its nuclear program, Iran is taking the position that it's the victim, not the aggressor. Iran is pointing to the cases of five slain scientists whose deaths it blames on Israel and its allies.

From Iran's view, it's been the target of clandestine hit squads for more than two years while the West has ignored Iran's claims that the Israeli Mossad spy agency is the mastermind.

"Iran's official line is that it's under siege, not the aggressor. This shows up everywhere in Iran's policies and statements," said Mustafa Alani, an analyst at the Gulf Research Center based in Geneva.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke on national television Wednesday next to photos of five nuclear scientists and researchers killed since 2010. Nearby was a large portrait of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei holding the son of Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, a senior director of Iran's main uranium enrichment facility, who was killed last month after a magnetic bomb tore through his car in Tehran.

During earlier ceremonies to insert domestically made fuel rods at a Tehran research reactor, Ahmadinejad lifted to his knee the daughter of nuclear electronics expert Darioush Rezaeinejad, who was fatally shot last year by a pair of gunmen on motorcycles. Iran's nuclear chief, Fereidoun Abbasi, embraced the girl.

The ribbon-cutting was done by the teenage son of slain nuclear scientist Majid Shahriari, who was killed in a November 2010 blast that also wounded Abbasi.

"What Iran unveiled was mostly for domestic consumption," said Davood Hermidas Bavand, a prominent political commentator in Tehran. "Iran tries to tell its people that it has achieved its goals and that it has achieved proficiency in the nuclear fuel cycle technology" despite sanctions as well as attacks allegedly linked to Israel.

Israel has not directly commented on Iran's allegations, yet officials have offered tantalizing hints that plots are always possible among Iran's many opponents.

For its part, Iran has strongly denied any links to a series of violent incidents this week targeting Israeli diplomats abroad. But Iran's sharp allegations about Israel's role in the scientist slayings ? as well as to cyber attacks targeting nuclear equipment ? serve to strengthen speculation of a payback campaign directed by Tehran.

On Thursday, Thailand's national police chief claimed that three Iranians planned to use a cache of explosives to target Israeli diplomats. The Iranians were detained Tuesday after accidentally setting off explosives in Bangkok. A day earlier, an explosion in New Delhi tore through an Israeli diplomatic vehicle, wounding the driver and a diplomat's wife, and an attempt was foiled in the former Soviet republic of Georgia.

Washington has urged allies to allow time for sanctions to pressure Iran in attempts to cool calls by Israeli hard-liners for possible military options targeting nuclear facilities.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced Thursday that it has added Iran's ministry of intelligence and security to its list of specially designated global terrorists. The largely symbolic step freezes any assets the group may have in U.S. jurisdictions, bars Americans from doing business with it and bans ministry employees from travel to the United States.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said intelligence shows Iran is continuing to enrich uranium but that Tehran has not made a decision to proceed with developing a nuclear weapon. The former CIA director said the United States is open to negotiations with Iran to find a diplomatic solution, but he said the U.S. keeps all options on the table to ensure that Tehran does not acquire a nuclear weapon.

A commentary Wednesday in the Jerusalem-based Israel Hayom newspaper echoed the views of Washington that this week's events suggest Iran is panicked by tightening sanctions on its crucial oil exports. But it offered words of warning that Israel could receive some unsettling blows from Iran's suspected efforts to strike back.

"An optimistic view is that there is a chance that this pressure will push Iran to the edge where it will decide to suspend its nuclear program," wrote Yoav Limor, a prominent defense correspondent for Israel's national TV station. "But there is a second edge, a dangerous and volatile edge, which Iran has been toying with in the past number of days. They are playing a game that could end up costing us dearly."

Such worries are not new.

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran has been accused of orchestrating attacks and plots through its own agents or proxies, such as Lebanon's Hezbollah. In one of the most high-profile cases, prosecutors in Argentina alleged Iranian links to the 1994 truck bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires, an attack which killed 85 people. Two years earlier, a bomb blast struck the Israeli Embassy in the same city, claiming 29 lives. Iran has denied the allegations and accused Israel and the United States of trying to use the case to taint Iran's image.

In January ? less than two weeks after the Natanz deputy director Roshan was killed ? authorities in Azerbaijan claimed they uncovered an Iranian-linked plot to strike at Jewish and Israel targets in the capital, Baku. In the U.S., prosecutors allege agents from Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard were behind a foiled plan to kill the Saudi ambassador in Washington.

In Moscow, Iran's ambassador to Russia, Mahmoud Reza Sajjadi, tried to distance Tehran from the Iranian suspects arrested in Bangkok.

"We don't reciprocate with terror to every terrorist act and we don't reciprocate to killings of our scientists," the Itar-Tass news agency quoted Sajjadi as saying. "We'll respond to Israel, but we'll respond by political means."
